Winner Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival 2017

Starring: Claes Bang, Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West & Terry Notary

Christian is the respected curator of a contemporary art museum, a divorced but devoted father of two who drives an electric car and supports good causes. His next show is “The Square”, an installation which invites passersby to altruism, reminding them of their role as responsible fellow human beings. But sometimes, it is difficult to live up to your own ideals: Christian’s foolish response to the theft of his phone drags him into shameful situations. Meanwhile, the museum's PR agency has created an unexpected campaign for ”The Square”. The response is overblown and sends Christian, as well as the museum, into an existential crisis.

Saw this yesterday and the scene evoked a lot of response from the audience. At first they were laughing, then it became intense and the audience didn't make a sound.

I just discovered Terry in Nope. I’ve been acting for a few years and I really don’t have the vocabulary to describe this scene. I’m just… wow. I’m struck at how inadequate human language can be in the face of certain forces. Brilliant.

I stumbled on this looking for 'man playing a monkey'. He's brilliant. It's startlingly real. What makes it perfect is the reaction of the extras. You can see they really are swept up into the scene and get mesmerized and yes, even uncomfortable in its realness.

Imagine being super late to your screening of this movie, walking into the theater, and this scene being the first thing you see on the screen lol

I just watched the perfect summary of the natural animalistic dominance clashing into civilized human behavior.

Spellbinding, and the acting is extraordinary. Can someone supply some back story?

This scene was inspired on performance artist Oleg Kulik. Kulik played a dog, chained next to a sign that said dangerous. During this performance act Kulik attacked members of the audience that ignored the sign and he even went as far as destroying other art pieces that were exhibited in the gallery.

It was funny until the second that man stood up and started howling.

Also at 1:28 you can see the frustration in Terry’s face, and he nudges his fellow actor and taps his temple.
A clear sign. “Get out of your own head and into this scene or I’m going to pull you into it.”

The other actor shoves him off and that’s when he turns on him.

Excellent layers of Actors communicating even non-verbally.

A lot of the extras were picked because they appeared nervous/ uncomfortable.

I just realized something.
This act wasn't random. It was perfectly logical.

The monkey enters a new territory, explores it for a while, sees the females in it. Then it shows the herd its muscles and the herd applauds.
It makes a loud call for challengers and surches for them in the herd as it wants to assess its dominance as new Alfa male.
The monkey spots a challenger, the only male that was standing up to it. He was laughing and wasn't intimidated by its presence, so the monkey makes fun of the opponent first and then physically frightens him to leave.
Another male (Christian) makes some strange vocal noises distracting the herd, but the monkey is half way in its action, so it silences him.
After the fight, silence and obbidience finally fills up the room. All the males and females of the herd are heads down now.
Another strange sound appears (the phone), and the now new Alfa male regains order by eliminating the problematic individuals.
The Alfa runs and stands up on a table to view its new-gained kingdom. Its dominance is unquestioned as it scares away another old male. Now that order and control are taken the monkey can have the females.
And so it does, taking the most appealing one.
But the old males attack it in group, not respecting the fair duel the monkey proposed at its arrival.
