The vikings and the British were not so different at the time they met. People forget that the Anglo-Saxons, were not actually natives of the British Isles. They were pagan Germanic tribes that came into the British Isles and pushed the Christianized Britons/Celts out of England. All this happened just a couple hundred years before the Vikings came in contact with England as we all know.

Finally! We British are the same people as the Scandinavian people. Thank you. Feels good to have reassurance that norse paganism and saxon paganism are nearly the same.

This falls in line with the composition of Beowulf and the Saxon affection shown towards Swedish legends.

To say that the Romans were terrified by the Scots is unfair. They were the greatest war engine of their age.
There simply weren't enough resources worth the trouble of an invasion after scouts investigated the land of Scotland, as well as the extreme weather conditions in the North, which the Romans weren't used to, having come from a Mediterranean weather condition.
They did pretty well in completing Hadrians' wall and keeping the troublesome picts out after it was built that isn't a terrified army, that is an organised strategic force.

What is the oldest known Paganism? Is it the Sumerian? Or do we have any history of anything older?
