Good points made here.  I competed in event last year that was able to eliminate the double guard position by stating that once in double guard, the 1st guy to stand up and remain on top for 3 seconds would get sweep points.  The only double guard pulls I saw instantly led to both guys getting back on their feet.  That was an Asian Sport JJ Federation event.  They had no advantages and tied matches were resolved by an unlimited, sudden death round that only ended when somebody scored or got a submission.  This led to a lot of excitement as it wasn't just people from the same academy that would follow the fights, everybody in the building would get sucked into the drama as people battled for the winning position.

I see your point in double-guard pulling and how it is translating into BJJ MMA fighters getting their head knocked senseless on the ground when they least expect it. Hopefully they (the double-guard pullers or someone who just pulls guard) watch a lot of BJ Penn videos and learn to ground-and-pound as well.

I think double guard pull has come from the tendency of starting on the knees in sparring.

I think the intent of the rule is to keep wrestlers/judokas from spamming takedowns, then immediately getting back up. Maybe keep the rule on engaging but give an advantage to the person who doesn't pull guard? That might encourage bjj players without a strong takedown game to at least stay standing when the other guy pulls guard.

I like this format, at least as good as captions.
Thanks for the analysis!

Eliminate the rule and find out. Force them to stand like in free style judo. (judo without Olympic rules). Put the penalty on the guy who would really be at a disadvantage in a fight. ie.. the guy who sat down first, on his ass for no reason. Guard pulls should be effective. Some form of connection or control over your standing opponent. Not just setting down on your ass.. Penalize ineffective guard pulls. Penalize the first person in the match whose ass touches the ground without connection or control. Give 1 point for a take down..

I like playing guard, but I agree Rule 6.4.3 gives an unfair advantage to the one who simply avoided the guard pull.

Great video as always!
That automated voice is not an improvement though.

Don't you think though that disengaging and stepping back being freely allowed can easily lead to takedown, step back, takedown step back and negating the grappling entirely. Especially no gi when it's much harder to hold onto the opponent.

Double guard pull: Disqualification for both fighters.
Problem solved.

A penalty because the opponent is so weak he can't secure a grip for a double guard pull, so he sits himself on the ground like a fool??? That is a stupid rule. The idiot who loses his grip and sits down should get the penalty, not the guy who remained standing. it is very obvious that rule was created to soothe the ego of a very poor player who was rich. Just like when Kendo created the rule of no stabbing to the abdomen to protect the egos of the rich boys with no defense skills.

If two people want to double guard pull, why cant they just play their damn game? Why do people who aren't even in the fight get a say? If you really don't like it, in your match, when someone pulls on you, just stand and pass. Its one thing if the fighters are getting paid; then, I can see dictating their games for the spectator aspect. But, these dudes are paying to compete and then having some control freaks, who don't like to watch that style, try and use BJJ bureaucracy to stop them? Its extremely gross. A pure sport jiu jitsu practitioner doesn't owe anything to real life combat effectiveness. I don't give one shit about fighting idiots in bars or on the street.  I don't care about what Helio or Carlos or anyone else says about 4DASTREETZ. I'm just trying to enjoy progressing a game of my choosing in sport jiu jitsu. Double guard pull is fun and there's really cool tech from there. Its not our fault if you just don't want to learn or don't like to watch it. How about all you haters just work on your own tech and quite whining to authority? Making rules to stop tech, for purely aesthetic reasons, is completely pathetic.

Question: the rule cited, and the example given from the dallas open. Caio sat down, with no grips, opponent (idk who) never engaged. He didn't break a grip and to disengage like the rule states. Why the penalty (at least under that rule)?

Nothing wrong with 2 points for a sweep.

I think the rule should be changed to allow disengagement after the first double guard pull and separation if there is inactivity in the 50/50.

BJJSCOUT , one point I often think of when I either watch or compete in a tournament is this: How often do we see a bjj match where the fighters spend the first 3 minutes standing and the next 2 actually doing bjj? Then people boo and say what a crappy match it was. At least pulling guard gets the bjj actually kicked off. If someone doesnt like it, perhaps they might try another sport or use bjj in another forum.
There are clear separating characteristics between sport bjj and real no-kidding fighting  bjj. I think that a lot of people blur this line. Is Keenan's worm guard a bs game? No way, he is playing smart and taking advantage of sport bjj. He is a great grappler and would no doubt never try to wrap someones jacket up in a worm guard if caught in a street fight... Those who do tie in sport bjj in mma got there butts handed to them (as demonstrated in your vid). The great grapplers know how to modify their game to win. And after all, isn't that what this is all about? The sport and the win? If you came to lose then by all means please do so.
If someone has fantastic judo or grappling game isnt as good as mine it would be ignorant for me not to go for guard. As any coach would tell you, play your strengths.
Great vids, I love your channel and share it often!
