Really, it's the surface area of the wire per unit length rather than the diameter (although they are related).

or you could make the diameter of the wire 10 times larger (or cross-sectional area 100 times larger). If you used 1 meter of 20AWG nichrome wire to complete the circuit, you will see a similar wire resistance if you use 1 meter of 1/0 AWG.

That being said, good luck in getting that small light bulb to even connect to that 1/0 AWG wire.
