I almost had to have this done with my first baby. Two days before my appointment, I was getting ready for work in the locker room on my jobsite and felt this really weird, really large movement in my belly. It had actually started before that, but wasn’t very intense. The last bit though, I really think my baby flipped herself over in a matter of about fifteen minutes that day, mostly in the last one minute. I had to go home because she really knocked me on my @$$ with that, and at my appointment two days later, ope what do you know, baby’s sitting right where we need her!

I was an external cephalic version baby, back in 1960. At that time it was becoming a lost art, and the doctor who delivered me was nearing retirement. I'm glad that it's back as an option.

My last baby was breech. She was frank breech (bottom down, legs bent up towards the head). I was so worried as I was terrified of having a c section and tried everything to get her to turn, but nothing worked. I asked for an ECV but was told that they couldn't do it as baby was measuring small for gestational age and they were worried that they would put her in distress. In the end I had a c section at 37 weeks and it was probably the best birth I had of all 3! The recovery was fine too. I was actually told by a few doctors and midwives that I could have given birth this way as they had doctors and midwives at the hospital that were knowledgeable in breech deliveries. However, due to baby's size I had to have a c section. She's healthy and happy now though and I'm glad it worked out the way it did.

I had that at 37 weeks and it worked! Thanks for the work that you do!! Happy that doctors do ECVs to help prevent C sections!

My little turkey flipped himself back. They moved him during labor but then he decided to come sunny side up instead.

There's a scene in 1899 (Netflix) in the pilot episode I believe, where the doctor turns the baby externally! I wasn't sure how accurate that scene is! Thank you for explaining!

Dr Jones, I worked 8 years in OB. A baby was turned & the doctor abrupted the placenta. 😵 😳 🤯 😱 Never did I see a fetal HR drop instantly. THANK GOD the OR was free & a stat C/S saved both mom & baby. The amount of blood. 😫 A very frightening moment. My heart was in my throat for the rest of my shift.

They tried that with my mom when she was in labor with me. I was breech. It wasn't working so they got her set up for a c-section, were literally taking her out of the room, and I flipped on my own lol.

My dad used to tease me that I've always been a bit chaotic, even before I came out. I was also 2 weeks late and barely weighed 6lbs.

They tried this on my mom. I refused to turn—she says that’s why I’m still so stubborn!

My friend was on Medicare because she was poor, and disabled. They sent her home from the hospital and told her husband to turn the baby, and don't come back until it's done. We had stopped by to visit. They were both in tears worried the ambilical cord might choke the baby. They didn't have a car, and needed neighbors to drive them to the hospital. Her husband managed to turn the baby that night, and they went back to the hospital the next day. The baby is ok, he's about 30 years old now.
I can't believe the hospital told them to turn the baby themselves. What were they thinking?

Our second was breech and we opted for a version because of the concern with delivering breech, but soon after turning her, she turned back up.

We then went for a consult with a Dr in town that would oversee breech births, but when we went in she had turned head down again and my wife started labor soon after.

During labor this kid spun head up/down/up/down at least 5 times before she finally came out head down.

As expected, this girl is the gymnast of the family. She hasn't stop flipping since.

I had this procedure done with twin B after I had delivered twin A and there was a break of contractions. It was awesome to see and didn’t hurt me or anything- I thought it was amazing 🤩

I'm so glad to hear that you do these versions . Midwives, have their mom's do handstands in water, to encourage spontaneous turning to vertex. Thank God for those like you .😊👋❤️

My poor mom had to go through that more than once with me. I refused to turn, and the Dr would turn me, and the next time he came to check on us, I would have turned back. Repeat procedure. I'm not sure how many times they tried it before I went into fetal distress. This was 60 years ago. They were very big on natural child birth, especially for first babies like me.

My best friend, I'm not even kidding, had to have this done and it worked and yesterday the baby was born in perfect health and he is gorgeous!

I had this done on twice with two different pregnancies. One was transverse and one was breech. They both worked. Very happy they did. My doctor's office was connected to the delivery hospital so if I needed to be moved because something went wrong I would just have to go upstairs.

An ECV is always treated as a horror story, I might not have done it, if I researched it on social media. Mine was great! First baby was breech and I had him turned successfully and pain free. OB and midwives were all super nice and they allowed my husband in even though it was during the pandemic. I went on to have a vaginal delivery at almost 41 weeks with no complications.

My neighbor, who is also an RN, had this done with her second child. She said it was very painful, but she was very thankful that she was able to avoid a c-section.

I was doing cartwheels at 37 weeks, but whenever mom and I were at the doctor's, I happened to be head up, so Dr. A thought I didn't have enough space to move and asked mom when she wanted to schedule a C section. (It was also a "geriatric" pregnancy). Mom told her I was doing cartwheels whenever she was trying to sleep, so Dr A agreed to try a version, followed by a specific acupuncture treatment if it didn't work. (Mom can be very convincing when her children are involved). It worked easily, and they could both tell I had moved, but were going to do an ultrasound that appointment anyway. By the time Dr. A was back from fetching the wand I had already turned back up.

She figured I had enough space. To this day I'm a serial procrastinator.

*First I want to acknowledge that I know, every case is unique and not every pregnant person is a candidate for every option!*
Mama Dr. Jones, I'm curious to hear a medical doctor's opinion on these options... (Please everyone, be nice. It's just a question.)
1) There is a chiropractic maneuver (maybe more than one, I'm not sure) that's sometimes used to encourage a fetus to turn.
2) There are different ways to position the parent's body (in late pregnancy, maybe also in labor?) that make baby want to turn to a head-first position.
