In this video, we’ll dive into the essential flows that every UX Designer must understand to effectively map user journeys within an application. As a UX Designer, crafting these flows is critical, yet many designers are often confused about the differences between Task Flows, User Flows, Wireflows, and UI Flows, as well as when to use each one appropriately.
We start with Task Flows, which represent the linear paths users take to accomplish a specific goal. For example, booking a ride on Uber involves a straightforward sequence of steps: opening the app, entering a destination, selecting a ride, and confirming. By visualising this linear journey, designers can identify opportunities to streamline the process, such as by suggesting favourite destinations to reduce the number of steps.
Next, we expand the perspective to User Flows, which provide a high-level overview of an entire user journey, such as booking a ride, changing payment methods, or scheduling a ride for later. User Flows encompass multiple Task Flows and are essential for understanding how different paths interconnect. By visualising these paths using standardised shapes, designers can assess whether certain steps can be simplified or combined, making the journey more intuitive.
We then introduce Wireflows, which integrate wireframes into User Flows, offering a clearer visual representation for clients and non-designers. Wireflows link these screens to form a prototype, which can be tested with users. Finally, we discuss UI Flows, which map actual UI screens to provide developers with a clear understanding of how each screen connects, ensuring a seamless handoff.
By the end of this video, you’ll have a comprehensive understanding of these fundamental UX flows and how to apply them in your design process. Be sure to check out my ebook for a deeper dive into creating these flows from scratch.
