Did Rick plan ahead for the idea that he'd rattle Morty to the point of making him want to shoot him or did he genuinely think he read the note and went 'okay, I'm gonna pretend to get mad so I can shoot Rick'?

Either way, this definitely foreshadowed some real issues Morty had that went completely unaddressed for a bit.

The best part of this is how it portrays the relationship of a Rick to a Morty- The Morty will not always get the instructions from their Rick, and are constantly emotionally abused by their Rick, yet they somehow complete the tasks they didn’t realize they were given. Ricks have Mortys because the last thing you’d expect the *smartest man alive* to do is have his own Morty do all the work.

So, technically, a Morty that can function without a Rick would be better than a Rick in every conceivable way, which is why they’re specifically bred and conditioned to always follow a Rick, and be the ones to die first.
Clearly, this didn’t work, as shown in the latest Season Finale.

One of my favorite scenes from this episode. I mean, you never know what kind of plans rick can come up with here. Even i loved morty and summer's reaction. At first, summer thought morty actually killed rick, but then she was shocked he came back. After all, i knew rick had some sort of plan up his sleeve because the gun was fake.
