My Unique Film Camera Collection

With Pentax's recent announcement bringing back film cameras, I thought it was a good time to share my Pentax film collection. I don't share a lot of film content on this channel (digital focused) but I do shoot film and it has a special place in my heart. All of these cameras have a story over the years. :)

As long as you are good-to-go with using FILM and all manual controls, it is my opinion that the Pentax MX is one the BEST film SLRs ever made. I have a few of them.

The camera is rugged and super durable; it can really take a lot of punishment. The shutter is entirely mechanical, and only needs a battery for the internal light meter, and it is the 1st camera to use a GaAs light sensing diode which is faster and more sensitive than the ubiquitous silicon diodes of the day. The entire body is a metal casting, the top and bottom covers are brass (not plastic), and it has a real pentaprism; not one of those crappy and dim penta-mirrors. Despite all of that, it is a *tiny* bit smaller than the Olympus OM-1.

To accompany the MX, an entirely new line of metal-bodied "M" series prime lenses that are much smaller and lighter than the previous lenses, but which are optically superb and have an improved formulation of their Super Multi Coating which is consistently better at rejecting lens flare than any of the several other lens systems I have. Additionally, this lens system is one of the very few that have tactile detents at half stops between apertures larger than f16.

The MX is not quite a "systems camera, " as the viewfinder is not removable, but there are 8 or 10 different viewscreens that are changed-out through the lens mount throat. There is also a data back, a 250 frame roll film back, an intervelometer, a winder, a 5 FPS motor drive, and probably a couple of others that I don't actually have.

The MX has no mirror lock-up, but every MX I have handled (a lot) has a secret TRICK. After winding, you can give the shutter release a sharp but light tap, and the mirror will fly up and lock without releasing the shutter! Afterwards, you just press the shuter release all the way down, and the shutter does its thing, and the mirror returns to the down position. With very little practice, the action is completely repeatable. If you try this, you will discover that the MX shutter (without the mirror action) is astonishingly vibrationless!

I see that I have written way too much, but it reflects how much I respect this little camera. I will stop now.

My first 35mm was a K1000. Purchased from Sears in 1985 for less than $130 bucks, 50mm lens included. I still have the FIRST picture I took with it, , , ❤️

Which do you use more out of the group? I'm still very much in love with my Pentax K1000. I still get weird looks from other photographers some times when I'm out with a model shooting 😂🤣😂 they have no idea how great a camera it is.
