That's called intentional grounding. That should have been an additional 10 yards, and there should have been an unsportsmanlike conduct call on the coach for another 15 yards.

This happened to us also. Our QB threw the ball into the stands and the clock was at 0:00 but the refs went to replay and decided to put 1 second on the clock based on when the ball crossed the out of the bounds line, not when it landed in the stands. The other team got the ball since it had been 4th down and they threw a Hail Mary and won the game.
