I'm Greek & I would say the cuisines were... mixed during Turkish occupation. And the moussaka you're eating does NOT look like moussaka. So it doesn't do justice to the traditional dish. Both cuisines are delicious!!! Good luck choosing!😂😂😂

I'm Greek. The way I understand it, the Greek foods that are relatively low in calories are probably Greek. The foods that are rich and heavy we probably borrowed them from our neighbours. The Turks had an Empire that lasted hundreds of years, and a Palatian cuisine which included that best foods and recipes from all corners of the Empire, all for the Caliph's pleasure. During the same time Greece was a poor province where people had to get creative with the few natural materials they could find or grow, and they did it well. That's generally the rule of thumb to figure out which food is really Greek and which is Turkish, of course there are exceptions.

That Turkish friend is a bit silly... The Turks didn't know any of the basic ingredients of the Greek cuisine, like the herbs (majoram, origano, rosmary, etc), olive trees (including olive oil), seafoods like octopus, kalamari, sea bream, etc. The first time they encountered these ingredients was the conquest of Greece. While the Greeks knew and cooked these for thousands of years.
