I used to work in a car dealership and was asked quite respectfully by my manager, not to wear my Rolex as it wasn't in keeping with the image they wanted to project to their customers. I get why

Its funny because its unlikely that someone would wait to rob you until they verify your watch brand. I woukd suggest staying away from gold tones though.

The point of Rolex is to project wealth - to a certain kind of person. This kind of person is probably not "into watches" unless it's some oddball niche or vintage Rolex, and they're probably not old money or some real hip sophisticated person. old money will deliberately tone down their wealth and take pride in wearing a 100$ watch when they could afford 100k. They think it makes them look humble, discreet and smart. Sophisticates will choose a lesser known brand just to be different, still chasing hype, but just not wanting to be basic and obvious.

The target audience is someone who understands that Rolex is an expensive brand, and cares, probably won't rob you or dig gold, but doesn't understand or care that it's not all that cool, lacking in innovation, not particularly historic (barely 120 years old, some Swiss brands are creeping up on 300 years), and overpriced for the quality. So like maybe if you're a moderately notable hip hop producer, in a safe area, Rolex is a smart choice. The mayor of a small midwest city. A staffer for a conservative politician.
