Why You Can't Return Electric Parts

Parts people aren’t excited to see you bring in a return. In fact, if it’s an electric part, they likely won’t accept it at all.

This video talks about that and my most recent experience with purchasing an electric part for my son’s Civic. I hope it provides some useful insight and entertainment.

Thanks for watching!

A big reason that they don't accept returns on electrical parts is if the part has been installed and the electrical part gets damaged, they can't tell. Too many people throw parts at a problem.

there are mechanics that throw parts at things till either they hit it by chance or the customer runs out of money. One of the things I appreciate about you. You make every reasonable effort to use good parts and only the ones necessary.

When I worked at a parts store, so many people tried to install the new part, clean up the old part, and return the old part in the original part's box.

Being in and out and in the parts business for 40 years, I hope all car repair personnel listen and hear your message. Thanks for telling it like it is.

I'd just install it — it's going to need replacing one of these days anyway. And yeah, I triple check part #s whenever I order Honda.

Great video, Eric. You seemed so happy in this video. Nice to see the Eric, we know and love. Customers are so deceptive and try to return their broken parts as being the new ones. Can't trust anyone.

Great video. This applies to car batteries too. People would drain a a new battery by cranking it til it wouldn't crank anymore to avoid saying their either had a bad starter or alternator or both and expected to get a refund. Instead they had a new dead battery and a vehicle had still would not start.

this happen to me long ago too. I learned you really got to read all the fine print. also it is a good idea to double check if u are getting a new part or a refurbished part.
that might be another interesting topic eric you could do. "are refurbished parts worth buying or go with new and the pros and cons."

Good points. I get previously enjoyed parts in the box from time to time. I call my supplier and let him know before i install it. As i expected a new working part.

I ordered an el cheapo distributor cap assembly from my 90 350 SBC from eBay. It didn't fit but they had a refund policy. Instead of paying for the return shipping they said keep it and we'll refund the money. That tells me that their cost on the part was actually less than the cost of shipping. I got a brand name MSD and am completely satisfied.

I always loved getting a brand new part from parts and seeing tape on the box.

This is a REALLY important video/psa whatever....I don't like getting parts that are already opened Especially an electronic part, that's why stores don't take them back! A good "mechanic" diagnoses the problem, a "new parts installer" just wastes money! I'm seeing Dumb comments saying oh they didn't take my return so I'll never go again...unless they denied you for a unopened brand new part, You probably shouldn't be throwing parts at a problem! That's why Eric is a *Good mechanic*!!!

Free tip Monday :-D If you open the part bag with scissors on the side where the bag had been melted together, you may use a hand plastic bag sealer and melt the bag again together so it looks like original :-D Than you have more than 80% chance to return it back. I have done it several times in the past when wrong parts where ordered and I accidentally opened it like you did :-)
