This quick sum in Excel is called AutoSum. The shortcut key for total sum in excel is ALT + = (i.e. hold down ALT and hit the = key). A really quick way of putting totals and subtotals onto a table of numbers is the shortcut key alt equals ( ALT + = ). Alt equals picks up everything above it, just hit enter after. But what if we had filtered the data and just had a few items showing…. that will give you necessarily the wrong answer. But again, if you use the shortcut key on filtered data it automatically detects you want a subtotal 9, which will only show the SUM of what is showing on screen, so there you go.

Thanks.. great trick! I did not know that you could ALT+= filtered data to auto enter SUBTOTAL(9, range). I've always done ALT+= to get the SUMs and then Find and Replace "SUM(" with "SUBTOTAL(9, ". Of course this is overkill for just one cell. But if wanting SUBTOTAL across many columns for example.. much simpler to throw on a filter, do ALT+= and then eliminate the filter vs. Find and Replace my old way.
