Ammit, the ancient Egyptian goddess of divine retribution, was the embodiment of divine retribution. Amit was a terrifying female creature with the head of a crocodile, the body and forearms of a lion, usually a lion or leopard, and the lower half of a hippopotamus. She sat next to Ma'at's scales, ready to devour the souls of the unworthy.

I just incidentally knocked over one of my Harry Potter books and Argus filch is named after a Greek century character who had a hundred eyes all over his body so that while 50 were closed in sleep the others were still wide awake and paying attention and that's why Argus felch the squib in Harry Potter is the caretaker late at night as much controversy as rolling is accruing for personal beliefs she really did name her primary supporting characters as well as long as they were involved in more classical mythologies. I will admit however to being confused reading the second book because I had played Amazon trail all the time as a kid there's a lizard named a basilisk and that's what I kept picturing a little lizard that can sometimes if it runs fast enough walk along the surface tension of water and the Amazon River basin.

But, in other folklore it's a huge ass snake whose eyes can kill you with a glance...
