I completely agree with Rooney, I said he needed to make that transition from RB to RM a couple of years ago, similar to how Bale was converted from LB to LM. If Ben White was in the England team I'd put him at CB and Stones in midfield, let Rice get a bit more forward.

Talking like TAA picks the team himself in these comments. He's not been the worst mid either game. Rice looks out of place, Gallagher has done nothing either game, Bellingham has few moments.
The midfield looks like Southgate has said don't move out of shape, watch Rice scream at who's near him to stay back, it's SG, not ANY player, but Trent is being called out specifically every day.

As someone who's seen literally every first team game Trents ever played, this whole narrative is a complete myth but that's what happens when you watch football in reels and buy into whatever the media sells you. He's been the poster boy of England's tournament failures despite creating the most chances playing with wingers not willing to run. Don't remember Scholes ever getting stick for not being able to defend because we were watching what he could do better instead. It's like saying Messi isn't a forward because he doesn't jump and score headers. TAA won the lot as a defender

Trent would be a perfect inverted wing back in Pep’s system. Anywhere else he doesnt really fit. Too gifted with his feet to be a defender but too poor defensively to be a holding midfielder. His role as a right back is about the only place on the pitch he can play right now

It’s not about hierarchy, it’s about he’s not gonna play in his position because Southgate wouldn’t ever dare be that attacking, so instead he plays a defender in midfield

When attacking turns into 3 at the back like City/Liverpool play. Trent moves forward to make use of his forward thinking passes. When Kane drops deep Bellingham moves forward like he has for Madrid. Could even still play Foden on left and Jude and Phil swap with fluidity like they do for their clubs (but i think natural winger in Gordon offers more defensively and attacking). The only way we will do well with this manager though is to play a rigid formation with two dm's and only one of either Foden or Jude. He doesnt have the capacity or nouse to play the above. I'd sack him and see if Eddie Howe is available to us through the rest of the tournament.

England now don't have a very defensive midfield player ..kalvin Philips could play in that position but he is not selected for England again.. the David batty & Paul ince of England hard to find nowadays.
