Automatically refresh your data in Power BI desktop

In the october power bi desktop update, they released the possibility to have automatic page refresh for direct queries in power bi desktop and the service too.
Here we go through how it works and what you need to watch out for.

I have some experience with auto refresh, especially if the rate is high, meaning ever 3, 4, 5 min for example.
This is what could happen, let say every 5 min you want a refresh, e.g. start 10:00, 10:05, 10:10… after a while (it depends) it can become like this 10:17 iso 10:15 then 10:22 iso 10:20…
In this example the refresh rate is still 5 minutes but shifted in time!!
Which on long runs of refreshing the data with every 5 minutes the start timing will be way of.
The reason for this is that your computer runs a lot more than the power bi desktop creating delays depending on what is running in the background (prioritized).
A solution could be to check every sec the time with the function now() and then take the calculation to see if you reach the refresh timing.
I don’t know if the power bi team has taken care of this.

Hello I am using March 2020 version an there is NO Page Refresh and YES I have enabled in the Settings. Please advise whether this feature was removed between December 2019 and March 2020

Could use the chrome addin that refreshes the whole page and then you are not limited by the refresh cap? This works with dashboard tiles

My data is published to powerbi service. The measures work fine in desktop, but after second refresh, I have incremental refresh setup, my measures are not calculating correct totals. Any ideas?

Great video. One question, I have a data set which has 2 millions of records and it usually runs for 10-15 minutes. Using this data set i have created a report. I want to understand if i set page refresh to 1 minute how my data set is going to fetch all the data which used to run for 10-15 minutes in a min. In what scenarios this feature is useful ?

Hi Ruth!, Microsoft obviously added this function to power bi desktop for people to try it and be encouraged to use it in power bi service. It does not make sense to use it in the free version of power bi desktop because you can not share the report privately in a massive way as @Pär Adeen said. It is important to say that the reports can be published in the shared capacity (power bi free cloud or pro) with Automatic Page Refresh enabled, but it won't work unless it is published to a workspace with a Premium or Embedded capacity.

Noob here. Data is refreshed according to the time set but you still have to save and publish it manually, right? Or there is an automatic way to do that?

i think PBi Desktio would work as MVP to give a taste and get people to work with the other tools (RTD/DQ/Premium/Embedded...)

I guess this feature in PBI Desktop will never compete with the services Microsoft provides in the PBI service. Yes you can share your pbix file on OneDrive for others to use, but this will only work for geeks. For true sharing and usage you will always end up in the service and as you say, this is where we starts to pay. So Microsoft has only done the free Desktop app more competing and they will get all the incomes in the service, that’s smart. I guess they could do the same with real-time tiles an still get all the incomes in the service.
