The Connecticut hitch shouldn't be done quickly. It will catastrophically fail if the carabiner is facing the wrong direction.

Running bowline with a stopper knot would be more effective and fast and more stable anchoring point as well

The PNW tree hitch uses a cordlette or sling to keep pitch off your rope

I hope each state has its own tree hitch.

How does that carabiner deal with side loading like that?

Arborist 24 strand rope with a splice eye and a Notch Quickie.

You could also do a running bowline on a bite

Or just tie a bow line and take the weak point out of the system?

"Connecticut Tree Hitch" just in case you missed it.

I'm absolutely sure the carabineer is even stronger like that than under its usual load, but something about my brain is screaming about it being loaded wrong...

Not sure if this is some Connecticut mountaineering/rock climbing trick but I hope people know there are way better options out there that are retrievable and a hell of a lot more secure than that.

Figure eight a bight in the tail end of your rope with the working end of the bight being 8-12” longer than the circumference of the tree. Wrap the bight around the tree and feed it into itself, and there’s your false crotch, run the working end of your climbing system into that bight and also around the tree and descend. Retrieve it all like you normally would.

Cool, but I don’t think that side loading a carabiner is safe.
Use a shackle and a butterfly knot and you can even retrieve your line. Safe climbing my friend!

Just make sure you clip the correct strands.

Is it a tree you can’t just walk around then tie a overhand on the bight? If so then yeah sure great.

Carabiner are not rated for this type of use, This greatly increases the chance for them to fail.

Carabeaners are not designed to be side loaded. You could use a knot like a running bowline or a cow hitch and make that allot safer and less dangerous.
