So I always thought it was creepy how FaceID works no matter whether you are wearing hats, glasses, or masks. But twins can't actually even unlock each others phones. Well turns out that's cuz FaceID doesn't only use one photo of your face.

You see, most people think you just train FaceID once and you're done. But the average american checks their phone 144 times per day. Apple takes advantage of that, and takes a new photo everytime to update the AI. This means the AI won't overfit to any surface level details. It's not AI, it uses the camera and lidar. The lidar detects if it's 3D or a flat image. The camera uses the setup images to detect key facial features.
The fact iPhone 16 hasn't received its huge Apple Intelligence update (Great marketing prople to get apple fanatics to believe that's what A.I. stands for.). This is why understanding how the features works instead of claiming and getting debunked works

It doesn't use the camera, it uses a 3d scanning sensor called a lidar sensor, if you don't believe me, set a face id with the camera taped

It’s actually not a “photo” as in how you’d take a photo with your phone. It’s actually a bunch little invisible dots that make a textureless 3D scan of the shape and features of the front of your face.

It's LiDar...




Light Radar. It basically shoots beams of light at your face and measures how long it takes to bounce back to make a 3d map of your face.
I'm not saying the video is wrong, just that it's not the entirely accurate.

You will never have trouble with face id not being able to recognise you and you never need to update it

Face id doesn't use the camera at all, if you cover the camera (and only the camera) it will still unlock

What I notice it uses eye tracking. If you look on the phone it will unlock. If you look at the phone while looking with your eyes somewhere else. It won’t unlock. Honestly cool
