I wouldn't mind taking an engineer and have them do car work for a day to experience his own work and flaws.

As a automotive engineer im gonna agree on that

Engineers are so advanced that they fail to recognize things that are simple even a dumb mechanic will notice.

Not the engineers its the besn counters that wont allow common sense changes i eas an engineer for chevy 32 years

We're not idiots we have some serious business constraints. Business leads the company not engineers unfortunetly. When we do package studies no doubt this popped up. But board level didnt take notice as it either cost to much to change the pacakging, time consuming, and to costly + neigbouring engineers will fight their corner to not agree (if not critical) so they do minimal changes and save extra work and costs. So the engineer who designed that error on packaging prob know and is unhappy but has no power to make the changes they wanted. Its bigger than 'oh just draw something up and make it' 🤦‍♂️ world is that straight forward when it comes to business and making profits. Engineering is secondary infortunetly. I've been in the industry for 15years and worked with 5major OEMs. So have something to go by.

So just put a piece of cardboard there so the oil bounces off and goes down.

It’s the masters of the engineers that are the evil

It would probably cost GM about $30, 000 to move that drain plug on just that model. At aluminum oil pan would have to be recast for each and every one of those models produced. Oil filter comes in a pasteboard box that can easily be fashioned into a deflector so that you don't spill the oil everywhere use your head.

Like the old OBS chevies that made every lube tecnician in the world thats worked on one have the exact same burn scar on their wrist thanks to the oil filter thats an inch away from a cross pipe right out of a manifold, Thanks Chevy.

Engineer... "We have designed a tool for that... Derrrr"

That's what I do, I find me a instrument of deflection, I position such apparatus in such a fashion that when I remove drain plug from the chat (temporarily), as the deluge of oil comes with utmost force from black hole my well thought positioning of deflection apparatus will guide potential disaster into oil catch device. Works quite well and Impalas are not only vehicles designed like this. Very stupid yes but easily overcome.

Unfortunately we are not idiots..this reason is that if you make it look down.. possibilities are that it can get in contact with the ground and break..leaving damage

It actually clears it on this car but some trucks have the plug an inch away from and pointing directly at the sway bar

This video is why I’m gonna try to become a certified mechanic so I know the practical effects of my designs as a mechanical engineer.

Thats when you get the oil caddy right under the drain plug and loosen the drain plug just enough to have a slow drain straight down itll turn a 15 mins oil change into a 30 min oild change tho lol

No where near as bad as some of the 5.0 f150 drain plug locations. Sway bar is directly behind it and the plug is about 3/4 of an inch. So on a hot change, that shit goes 10 feet in every direction. I just drop the sway bar. Takes 30 seconds

I’m an engineer (not automotive) and I approve of this message.

My favorite is the Subaru ring of fire filter change... I got REAL good at making the customer fucking wait till that bitch of a car cooled down. Also fucking haye the tundra cartridge filter WITH 0w-20 and YES i used the plastic nipple that you shove into the bottom of cartridge filter housing to drain oil.. I hated popping the drain plug to have 7 lbs of hot oil act like water. I was so happy when our shop got the mats that go in oil drain pans that stop any splashing
