Cabin Rate of Climb and Aircraft Rate of Climb Explained.

In today's video, we are going to talk about the Cabin Rate of Climb and the Aircraft rate of climb of the Boeing 737.

The Boeing 737 has two Rate of climb indicators, one on the Primary Flight Display and one on the overhead panel.
These two vertical speed indicators should give you a completely different rate of climb indications.

The Overhead rate of climb is a lot shallower than the vertical speed indicator of the PFD.

This is so because the rate of climb displayed in the overhead shows you the climb rate inside the cabin, so, if your cabin is climbing at 400 feet per minute that means that as a passenger you will feel a climb at 400 feet per minute.

The Vertical Speed displayed in the PFD however shows you what is the rate of climb of the Aircraft.

If you are wondering why this is so the answer is because the Aircraft is pressurized.
It is important to monitor the cabin rate on the overhead because it tells you if the cabin pressurization system is working.

If you experience a rapid depressurization during the cruise you will see that the PFD Vertical speed will remain 0 however the Cabin Vertical speed will raise significantly.

Hi there Captain, thanks for the video. What is the safest rate of descent in case of rapid depressurization? If you're cruising at FL360 and you need to descend to FL100 what speed and V/S would you use?

Only now did I see this video. Also, only now I'm at that level of wondering about passenger comfort vs rate of climb. Been wondering if climbing at or even over 4000 feet per minute is something pilots actually do in real life such as using level change to get faster to the TOC.

What if your climbing through 16000-18000 and cabin rate of climb is indicating zero and -50 instead of +300 or +500 which is the normal indication, and cabin altitude is stuck on one number 2600 feet. What do you think is happening?
