Here's Why The Nintendo Wii Is More Complicated Than It Looks

The Nintendo Wii came out back in 2006 and managed to sprint to selling over 100 million units making it the best selling system of the generation. While the Wii isn't a technically impressive system with its specs that fit into the previous generation better, inside the system is quite complicated to take a apart compared to the other systems.

I have such an interesting relationship with the Wii. My grandfather got one of the early ones and loved it. He died in April 2008, but today me and my older brother looked at how the save data on the system. He started crying when he saw my grandfather’s data. His last memory of him is playing the Wii when my grandfather was really sick. The Wii is a fun system, and I still play mine often. Good video!

For those who did not know:

The reason why the Wii's disc's drive fails so much, was because of double layered discs causing execessive strain on it.

Have your disc reader died? Did you play a lot of Super Smash Bros Brawl?
Yeah, that was why.

Cheers.

I used to watch Youtube on the Wii until they shut the service down in 2017. The pro was that it had no commercials at all, also funnily one could see old avatars of users wich they probably used before Youtubes redesign. The quality was not HD, but it was great to simply run it in the background. The Wii uses around 14 Watt, so playing or watching something over a long period of time does not cost much money at all in the end.

I'm convinced that half the weight of the Wii was in screws...lol.

I think the only reason wii play outsold so many other games it's because it came free when you bought a Wiimote. I have some friends who had 3 copies of that game because of that.

Seriously a missed opportunity that they didn't name the Wii Mini the *Wee Wii.*

To be fair, Wii Play came with a wii remote

The Wii retains its place connected to my TV simply for the easy to use emulation it can do for retro gaming. It was, and still is, an excellent little console

Awesome video. Would you consider doing a Wii mini tear down?

Great vid Spawn! I think I mentioned in my recent Wii Buying Guide how I once got a copy of Pokémon XD stuck in my Wii and had to pry it out with tweezers. Still have that game and it still works somehow!

It pays Wii games, GameCube games, and eshop games... it’s gotta be complicated to be that awesome.

Looks like your Wii is a later release, but before they removed the GameCube ports - it has the die-shrunk 65nm chips for both processors. Due to this these models were prime targets for portable mods.

The Wii Play selling well, you shouldn't overstate the game being the reason for that. At least in Europe, it was packed with a Wii Remote for £35. A Wii remote alone cost £30. People would have just got the bundle to have a little game for an extra £5.

"...hit the fuses" these are 0402 capacitators and resistors sure enough not fuses.

Just FYI, the little things on the GPU package around the die are capacitors, not fuses.

The Wii's design we pretty pro-consumer. It was built solid. The bluetooth range on it was incredible. The easy access to the clock battery is something you don't really see on consoles. The compact vertical design was a great space saver too.

We saw thousands of Wiis back when I was repairing consoles, like you mentioned 99.95% of them were kids throwing things into the slots(infact I have a few videos on my channel from that), the next major problem was just dirty lasers, I had a few laser replacements aswel but we tended just to replace the lens, the drives are expensive when you factor in shipping, I might have seen 3 bad motherboards during that time, bad BGA soldering was to blame, other problem was the bluetooth module would fail and the system will start up with a black screen, you can actually test for it by pressing the sync button and looking if the drive flashes XD

Worst one I saw was a ant infestation, will never forget the ladies face when I showed her, there were hundreds of eggs, thousands of ants, cleaned it up and the motherboard worked 100% extremely robust console.

PS Subscribed, you know what your talking about especially the xbox 360 refurbish video!
