Why these phones NEED to do more.

OnePlus made a great impact to the market when it came to software and speed. Now that its competitors have all all but caught up with OnePlus' performance, how can a new brand differentiate? Nothing and its CMF sub-brand have made headlines but is their message surface level, or does it offer something more meaningful?

Nothing is actually bringing nothing to the table. Yet another marketing trick.
OnePlus was putting customer first with decent hardware with customer aligned software while Nothing is projecting to bring customer aligned hardware without really doing so, as you rightly pointed out by mentioning headphone jack, user removable batteries.

I refuse to buy new phones from new companies until they have proven themselves. I had the first OnePlus One and it was great but did I hate it due to all the bugs.

I have to disagree. Nothing is about fast fluid performance with great battery life powered by a well tuned chipset, all in a uniquely designed package for reasonable prices. They did exactly that with a transparent design, 120hz display, 10 hours+ of SOT on their latest phones, consistent updates every month, and more. While I was bored of the Phone 1, the Phone 2 has been a completely different story with its redesigned and incredibly refined NothingOS. The phone doesnt ever break a sweat. The cameras are much improved from Phone 1, especially since they overhauled the camera, more glyph support (with more to come) and more. I seriously can't put this phone down and also can't wait to see what innovations come with the AI based Phone 3. Ear 2 has been absolutely great for me as well, with good bass and treble as well as solid noise cancellation!

A stock Android phone with a decent chip and good battery life was much needed. Im happy that Nothing offers this for a decent price!
Other phone makers are sadly out of touch with their customers. Don't get why AP is hyping OnePlus and hating on Nothing.

Motorola seems like a sort of enthusiast brand, They seem to listen to what people want in their foldable segment.

I have since ditched flagships. I've had numerous Galaxy Ultras and Z Folds. Great products for sure, but for my needs I realized over time they are overpowered for what I like to do. I have since got the Nothing Phone 2A and have been pleased with it. I'm having great battery life, a nice OLED display and my my favorite thing so far is the software. Sure it's not as customizable as One UI, but the minimalistic approach and theme of Nothing is such a pleasure to use. Although yeah the glyphs are useful at times but it still feels underbaked and gimmicky.

As opposed to other, big name tech tubers, you can tell Ryan is an actual phone enthusiast

Previous nothing phone 2 user here. The camera performance is what really lets it down. Photos look good when you have time to focus etc. but if taking a quick shot expect slow shutter speeds and a blurred photo

100% agree about Nothing and CMF. I appreciate their design language and the collaboration with teenage engineering, but as mentioned my problem is these phones don't really go much beyond style. There's nothing really to distinguish them outside of looks and if anything I would rather see the specs improved or have something unique to them outside of what the other companies are offering. Take the nothing phone 2 for example, outside of its looks what is there to make people buy one over say a google pixel 8/8a? Which you can get for the same price now? Nothing except on a pixel you will get very useful distinguishing features like incredible cameras and long updates. Also there are other Snapdragon 8+ gen 1 phones that are available on the market that offer more for the same price. I would rather see nothing go against the grain and make a small phone for example or put an amazing DAC in the phone for audio enthusiasts just something that can distinguish them outside of style.

There isn't much room for flagship killers anymore because they also have to fight not just against old used flagships but also the current latest and greatest. Enthusiasts know this and are frequently leaning towards older flagships instead of new mid range or flagship killers.

Where i live Nothing devices are really overpriced for what you get. When Phone 2 released, it cost just a bit under the base iphone 14 and almost the same as an S23. we are talking around around a 5 10 euro difference per month at my carrier. and for that money the iphone will get support for like 6 7 years while nothing offers 2 or 3

If CMF had a good processor and smaller screen I would have gone for it just for the sake of swapable back panel and easy to replace battery.... I hate putting case on already bulky phone nowadays

The brand name lacks seriousness, it sounds 'prankish' but I do like their design simplicity.

As a flagship user, it's really amazing how good low and midship devices are. It's really like 80+% of the 1000 plus devices. You really just pay for niche gimmicks and futureproofing.

headphone jack and expandable storage should be standard in devices across all price ranges but then companies won't be able to sell you their wireless headphones and extra storage variants, that's precisely the reason they won't change. It's not a consumer focused brand but a profit focused that is why customers will continue to have to pay extra than required

I like listening to this guy, just some good no bs commentary on tech.

No headphone jack, meh..the problem with usb c headphones is the double rate of wear on that port. And without wireless charging you're screwed when it finally fails

As a Nothing Phone 2 user, bro all I want is a good camera and I'm satisfied. The camera is so bad on this phone. And PLEASE, a telephoto camera, please. I switched from a OnePlus 7T and ngl, the camera on that 2019 phone feels better than this. I still go back to it sometimes, peak OnePlus imo.
