South American Countries - Ranked from Best to Worst

South American countries appear to be among the top bests and also among the top worsts. This is a unique feature of the continent. In fact, the best country in South America can match or rank better than some countries in Europe and Asia. But what is the best country in South America? Let’s start by asking the question, how many countries are there in South America?
For record purposes, there are 12 independent countries on the continent. Here are those countries in a simple alphabetical order: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela. Besides these 12, there are two dependent territories, namely, the Falkland Islands and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands among several other territories. But let’s focus on ranking only the 12 independent South American countries from best to worst in this video.

1. Uruguay
Uruguay is considered the best country in South America. It’s generally held as the safest place in South America. You will agree no less when you consider its laidback atmosphere. Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, is often associated with the Western European café culture. Uruguayans generally have a high standard of living as the government is doing its best to reciprocate the goodwill it's enjoying. Note also that natural disasters are not a threat to the Uruguayans. This one advantage is enough to make it the best country in South America. It also has the best of many tourists attractions on the continent while the people are quite friendly.
2. Chile
Chile, the second-best country in South America on our list has certain things in common with Uruguay, the very best country. Chile ranks high in safety globally. It hasn’t been ranked outside the top safest 30 countries in the world. Natural disasters are uncommon here. The cost of living in Chile is low for its high standard of living. This is probably because Chile has the strongest economy on the continent. This economic strength is partly responsible for the very low crime rate in the country and Chile is the least corrupt in that region. In South America, Chile has the lowest poverty level.
3. Argentina
Argentina is among the top best countries in South America. As one of the southern countries, most of the South American features in Argentina are in moderation. But for safety, it ranks a lot higher than nine other countries. While you may hear of dengue fever, especially in places like Salta, the healthcare system in Argentina is excellent. It is free for every Argentine and tourist that falls sick while visiting the country. The country hasn't experienced any political turmoil in recent times despite its economic challenges that should have caused protests and riots in other countries. Argentina has a diverse and vibrant landscape in towns enriched with culture and liveliness.
4. Paraguay
Ranking as the fourth-best country in South America is Paraguay. It tops this list due to its clement weather and predictable climate. According to the Global Peace Index, Paraguayans don't have a lot of things to be worried about. For one thing, it’s not a country often visited by tourists. Thus, many areas of its major cities haven’t caught the attention of criminals. The Paraguay soil is fertile, which endows it with lush forests.

As a South American who understands the region, I have many things to say about this list, and it feels like the research put into this was null, focused on travel safety, and failed at that miserably.

Natural disasters aren't common in Chile? It's the country with the worst earthquakes ever recorded!

The most correct name for the video would be: Ranked from SAFEST to MORE DANGEROUS. Better or worse doesn't make any sense on the subject...

Brazil is a continental country larger than all of Europe in territorial extension, with 27 very different states, Rio de Janeiro is just one city in the country, I am impressed how foreigners summarize the country as just one city.

This video did make a big mistake with Chile. It is one of the most seismic countries in the world, similar to Japan on that regard.
We do suffer earthquakes and tsunamis, yet we are well prepared for them. This does cost a HUGE toll though on a poor country (compared to western powers) that is trying to develop among its means.

I traveled extensively in Colombia in 2019. While it still has problems, it's very changed from the 1990s, when I visited it previously. With reasonable precautions, I usually felt safe. I would definitely rank it higher on this list, especially if you consider culture, lifestyle, scenery, climate, etc.

Definitely if you talk about the best and worst countries in South America you should take into account more information such as the HDI GDP, GDP per capita and many more things. And with all that, Peru is in a better situation than Paraguay, Bolivia and Ecuador, and Colombia would be at the same level as Peru or even one place higher. Your video only talks about security, in which case your video should be called the safest and least safe countries in South America so as not to confuse people who don't know those countries.

Brazil is impossible to describe in a few words. The diversity of the cities and landscapes. I acknowledge that there are dangerous places in the country such as some places in California, Florida, London, Paris. The tourist has to be alert even in countries such as Switzerland, the danger doesn't announce when it comes.

I am Chilean and I have experienced 2 earthquakes here in Santiago of Chile:
1. In 1985, grade 7.5 approximately (me with my family (I was still a minor)).
2. In 2010, grade 8.8 (me living alone in an old house. I thought the walls of the house would fall on top of my head. I took a bottle with water, a flashlight and my ID card and I went inside under my table and pushed the chairs together until the earthquake ended). All Chileans are already used to this.

You completely ruined the ranking putting Paraguay and Bolivia above Peru. That is seriously misleading.

I'm retired from the US in Colombia now for three years...and if you and your sources think for a hot second that the likes of Suriname, Guyana, Paraguay, and Peru are better on any level of comparison than Colombia, then you and your sources don't know Colombia, and I can assure you that many expats will lend very little credibility to your rankings and a nice day..

He also forgot to mention that France has a territory known as "French Guiana". But it's cool that I didn't know an island called "South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands" existed.
