The number of players who can beat a defender one on one using skill and not pace is far smaller now than at any time I’ve watched football.

Bergkamp, Zidane and Berbatov all absolute ballers for sure!

R9, R10, Zidane, Figo, Bergkamp, Savicevic, , Litmanen, Baggio, Romario, Robinho, Rivaldo, Berbatov, Guti, Okocha, Rui Costa, Del Piero, .... The amount of fabulous players loving the beauty of the right touch, the flair, was absolutely amazing. I loved that football so much

When Del Pierro played in Australia he was half the speed of everyone else but had twice as much time. He was like Messi in slow mo. Unreal skills. Made everyone look hopeless.

I miss Ronaldinho. He was an absolute baller with real skill.

Been saying this for years, the modern day footballer is an athlete trying to be a footballer, where as 15/20 years ago it was footballers having to be athletic.

People forget that the greatest players who ever kicked a ball don’t care about the speed of the game. They force opponents to play play at THEIR pace no matter who’s in front of them.

He knows it more than anyone. He had the brain, the speed and the finishing.

It's because it's more emphasis on tactics and athleticism. There's less individualism. You can't express yourself or have fun with the ball no more. Follow these instructions and do em well. That's why football seemed more fun but it's harder nowadays

The number of midfielders and wingers that can't dribble nowadays is astonishing

so true.... especially in the premier league... It is so dry and rough, no magic in it.. Miss the 90s

He's not wrong. It's what makes the game beautiful and mesmerising to watch back in the days. And the sad thing is the games now don't even have a place for players like that.

I think the more rigid nature of modern tactics is part of the reason why today’s player might look less impressive individually.

Spot on, been saying this myself for ages. Modern football is so dull because of it.

When he was talking about having a decent career if you can run a bit more than others and can pass it from A to B, he was describing Kyle Walker.
