I really admire Japan People. It is not only their skills but also their strong will to overcome technical difficulties to be leading of world's shipbuilding. 本当に素晴らしい。

I have been to Japan many times. They have become a global manufacturing powerhouse not by accident. They work v hard, dedicated to their work and jobs, stay energetic throughout the day by doing limbering up after lunch, speak their own language, polite, friendly and helpful, have an abundance of honesty in their deailings in a society which is not corrupt as we see elsewhere, etc, and the list goes on and on. Any person, country or individual who does all this and has these attributes will be successful in what they do. Japan is quite simply the best country in the world. I rememer that I could only fault it on being an expensive place to visit. Apart its safe, comfortable, interesting, welcoming, hospitable, well...I better stop...

A lot of cargo ships are made in China, but the ones made in Japan are much better. I work on the waterfront in Vancouver, Canada and if you blindfold me and just drop me into a cargo ship without seeing its name, I can tell you if it's Japanese just by the cleanliness and workmanship. Better fitment and much superior welds.

Peter Barakan: "How long does it take to master this skill?" Any one on any Japanology show: "Ten years". Peter! It always takes ten years!

Some improvements in wooden shipbuilding came from the initial contact between Japan and the Spanish Empire. Some Japanese artisans spend several months in Acapulco, MX learning to build the Spanish galleons, at around the XV-XVI century.

Mitsubishi has also air underneath hull, but it is a boundary curtain layer of bubbles to reduce drag so we can use smaller engines and less fuel and has already been deployed with predicted results. Sumitomo Heavy Industries built the largest ship ever constructed, having many previous names but most famously the Knock Nevis supertanker, which was in service until 2009 and finally scrapped after 30 years. She was over 1, 500 ft length, and drawing 81 feet of water depth and nearly 230 feet wide, and carrying 260, 000 tons or 4, 050, 000 barrels of oil. Still is the biggest ship ever built. Of course, prior to WW2, Mitsubishi Kure built the Yamato and Musashi battle ships which were they biggest ever built and 4 hulls were constructed, one being turned into the IJN aircraft carrier Shinano, which remained the largest ship and largest carrier until the US Forestall Class super carriers starting in 1956.

Who brings Japan back in the track in shipbuilding as american billionaire "Daniel K. Ludwing" we can call him "father of supertanker era" - This man always looking for new fast opportunities to makes money, Ludwing chartered for 10 years Kure Shipyard in 50's only for "jumborized" own ships (up grading old tankers), Ludwing bring to Japan the same technic used in US shipyards in WWII ( Ludwing has own shipyard in US - Welding Shipyard), the first gigantic ships are made in Kure Shipyard they break a barrier of 100.000 tons the name of ships is SS Universe Leader also a sister SS Universe Commander both are the really first supertankers made in Japan under Liberian flag registry and international crew. Bring crude oil from Middle East to US and South America.
Also "T/T Idemitsu Maru" have some Ludwing fingers involved in that project of first VLCC - very large crude carrier.
