Tsunade was an insane medical genius. Like she invented so many techniques and revolutionised medical ninjutsu. Sakura was also a medical genius but she didn't get a chance to really invent something new after learning everything Tsunade had to offer (in 3 years because she's just built different). Imagine if Choji actually pulled out a new pill near the end of the war that put him on 8 gate level.
I imagine for it to be an insane version of his other food pills, instead of just making him consume more chakra, he actually starts pulling in chakra from outside of his body. Only unlike sage energy, he's also using energy rapidly like some kind of warp speed metabolism, essentially turning him into a human black hole.
Like his butterfly wings grew to Tailed beast size and turn pitch black along with the rest of him and he just starts bodying the Ten Tails. That is until he runs out and is left an anorexic husk that barely has time to move before turning into ash.

Neji and Choji both had a lot of gravitas to their last scene during the Sasuke retrieval arc. That honestly made it look like they died.

And I honestly think that was the original intention.
But I think it was realized that if Naruto failed to get Sasuke and other characters from Konoha died?
That would’ve really alienated a lot of readers.

Especially if they wanted Naruto to continue to want to try and “save” Sasuke.

Because having people literally die around Naruto while he just stands there, asking the guy who shoves a lightning fisted his chest to return to the village, would’ve been too hard a pill to swallow.

I remember that actually like they played it up so much about how the red pill was fatal and thats what made his butterfly form so dramatic was that he's suppose to die. It was a one last hoorah to save his team. Imo, it would had been perfect if Naruto followed the AOT method of having characters you've come to know deeply just be off'd by self sacrifice or etc. it makes the show so much more reality feeling. When at war, you're not gonna feel like.youre winning even if you're winning, sometimes
