Very historicist of him. I know he’s Hegelian, but that’s some good old fashion Leopold van Ranke vibes, and I’m here for it.

That is very true. Situation is dynamic and there are chain reactions to previous events, but it is all on table until it is not.

What a giant. He seems to engage in such a wide range of topics. And somehow, he manages to find fresh perspective everywhere his curiosity leads him.

If you take any historical attrocity that primarily affected your people; war, famine, colonisation, subjugation etc, it needs to have happened for you to be able to be here in the present to observe how terrible it was. The Anthropic Principle of Atrocities.

A very reasonable and well spoken gentleman. I could listen to such people for hours.

Even if history is deterministic, the system is too complex for us to predict how it evolves. And the act of predicting it also affects the course of history, adding another level of complexity. For all practical purposes, we should treat history as open and unpredictable.

Alfred North Whitehead will help you understand this superposition of historical events and any event in the universe for that matter. There is “openness” as Zizek calls it in which any actual ocassion is opened to an infinite realm of possibilities (termed eternal objects) which Plato already had individuated. In a historical war or event the same underlying phenomena also falls into this concressence of what it might be or what it might not be. However from personal experience when COVID started I thought it was just like the H1N1 quarantine which lasted for a couple of weeks in my hometown, boy was I wrong. COVID lasted much longer and we, whether we liked it or not, were in the midst of that actual quarantined universe, as active participants.

For a WW3 we would find ourselves in situations for which our points of reference from past experiences would fall short because of the already discussed (and lived) possibility of ‘novelty’.

I've watched it several time trying to understand whether I'll be the idiot who did not buy BITCOIN at 96.000 dollars or the clever one who had done it in the last right moment.
