Build a LinuxFromScratch System Part 2: Scripted Partitioning & Formatting

In this video, we start actually building the LFS system. The first step is partitioning and formatting the target device. We do that by controlling fdisk from a BASH script.

Hi Viktor! Thanks for making the series 😬👍. One of my next hobby projects will for sure be to create my own Linux based on your series here. Greetings, Nils

I tried building LFS some time ago. It was time-eating but kind of satisfying. I finished my building on standard LFS, not went through BLFS and others.

Am at 50% of this video (automating partition setup) and decided that I'll make time to watch and follow this series from the very start; ep01. An episode every two or three days.
I see it is also possible to mount a file as a block-device, making things a little more quicker than over USB. I assume dd can then be used to duplicate the file to the USB key when all is complete. We'll see.

hello sir, thanks for making this series and I've learned a lot from the series you have made, I've also read the LFS books and it has tons of information but it was a bit difficult to go through, after watching this series I can say that I've a bit deeper understanding of linux system.
It'd be nice if you created a discord channel where one could talk about creating their own operating system or something like that.

Great video very educational and easy to follow along. In addition i like your coming off the top of the dom explaining things lol though you should format the disk then explain in script. Just an opinion. I installed arch linux so many times in a virtual machine just to learn the commands now fdisk is stuck in the back of my head lol

Did you have any specific reason to create a DOS partition table instead of the more modern GPT table?

trailblazer_nomad

Isn't better to make the bootable partition a FAT instead of ext2?

There's also a utility called sfdisk, that might be a better tool to use in a script.

Hello i am learning thank you... ¿why use ext2? over ext4 ...please help me learn more...thankyou

Hi, guys. Why do we create in fdisk a new DOS partition? Doesn't linux have its own type of partition? Or it's not necessary just because we convert it later to ext4? So why then we cannot create an ext4 from the beginning? Thanks for answer, guys
