As a German it blows my mind that Americans struggle so much with trash separation. Of course not everyone follows the system well in Germany, especially not in offices but we have the system and actually use it and recycle a lot as a country overall.

When you opened the black bags i was shocked!
Do you just throw everything in one bag???

In germany we have different bins for paper, trash, food and plant waste that can be compostet, and the "yellow bag" for packaging and plastics. Besides these 4 bins we have extra bins all over the town where you bring your glass, also sortet by colour, because white class can't be recycled into white glass if there is one little bit of brown or green glass in it. And we can bring our old batteries and bulbs to any supermarket or store that sells electronics, so that it gets recycled properly.
We also have "Pfand" on most of our bottles and cans, so we pay 25ct per bottle extra, but if we return them, we get the money back and the bottle gets recycled correctly.

It sounds much, but it's really not that much of work.

How about reducing the about of bottles and cans and bags employees consume to begin with?? Encourage them to bring their own food, have healthy drinks on tap so they won’t have to buy packaged ones etc, set up food sharing between employees etc. I don’t know how exactly Buzzfeed office works but reducing use should come before recycle and compost.

I wish we had recycling bins at our school. they set out recycling bins to make it seem like they recycle to guests and clueless students, but at the end of the day it all gets thrown in the dumpster :(

I'm really glad people like her exist, if no one cared the world would be a bit worse each day. You just need one person to make a change. It pains me how much food is wasted in general, knowing how many people starve in the world.

amazing. i hope everyone at Buzzfeed and tons of people outside of BUzzfeed will watch this video. I've been slowly becoming more conscious about being waste free in my daily life and for a company like Buzzfeed, just recycling and composting should be SO easy and I'm so glad someone did a video like this. it crazy how much people waste by just throwing everything in the garbage. its so easy people!! just think before you throw something away for like 2 seconds! research it or stick a sign up, and boom, you're golden.

At my workplace we all have keep cups - if i forget mine, i feel instant shame when using the disposable one! We also have a no straw policy as well as gum recycle points. Plus we have tubs next to recycle bins, so we can throw away leftover coke etc before recycling the can :)
