Hey Arvid, I was wondering why you don't mention Light samples at all. It's not the first time I see you explaining Arnold sampling workflows skipping those but I found in my tests that increasing Light samples is much cheaper than increasing AA samples to clean up the shadow noise and the direct passes (both Diffuse and Specular). Yes AA does everything as a multiplier but it also invokes shader calculations per each ray hit whereas when you use more Light samples, it calls the shader once per hit but sends more rays for shadows to the Lights for "free" I guess. So increasing the light sampling of a large soft light to 3-4 would make almost no difference to the render time but will clean up lots of noise. And if you try to achieve the same shadow quality with AA samples, you'll end up with a much larger render time and the result may not look as good. So I wonder why =) as I wouldn't ever question your qualification )

I think this is a really great idea. I think the thing for (folks like me anyways) that trick is trying to keep so much scattered information in your head. Quick reference videos like this packed with information about one subject is really great!

I wouldn't mind a short video like this going over the render settings tabs "System", "Common", and rendering out your shots/stills. I also suspect going over the AOVs would be super useful to a lot of artists. I also would love an updated dedicated video for installing ACES on a modern copy of Maya 2022 (dedicated so it's easier to find and quicker to reference) and the plug-in you used in one video to use a "locator" to do perfect Depth of Field setups.

Great stuff, keep it up! This was useful will be something I come back to a lot.

Are those settings for a general scene to get the best low noise quality, or is there more things needs to be changed? - Let's say for a Kitchen interior design with many lights, how do you go about the values with Arnold for the least possible noise (or preferably) no noise at ALL.

maybe same for V-Ray / Renderman??? Love the format!

Isn't the shadow samples dependant on the samples of hte individual lights? If you are using diffusee samples to resolve this I think you are just flooding the noise with a bit more indirect diffuse light. Also the Direct pass of reflections need the light samples. I usually leave it at 2 for low camera AA samples. What do you use?
