The Chanson de l'Oignon ("Song of the Onion") is a French marching song from around 1800.
According to legend, it originated among the grenadiers of Napoleon's Imperial Guard. Before the Battle of Marengo, Napoleon found some grenadiers rubbing an onion on their bread. "Very good," he said, "there is nothing better than an onion for marching on the road to glory.

On this day 200 years ago, Napoleon I died in exile in St. Helena. Whether you are a Royalist, a Bonapartist, or a republican, we can all agree that Napoleon was truly one of the greatest military leaders of all time. May he rest in peace and may France find a new Napoleon-type figure that can lead it out of its current decadence, and towards a new era of French glory, peace, and prosperity.

Do we all agree that if we don't hear this banger in Ridley Scott's movie, we will riot like it's 1789?

Russian military songs: remember the glory of our fatherland! Let's fight and die for our nation and honour our fathers! Long live the Empire! God is with us!
German military songs: let's advance towards the enemy, we are not expected to come back, we are going to die for the Empire in the muddy dirt!
French military songs: I love onions fried in oil! I love onions, it's so tasty!

My four time Great Grandfather fought in the Grande Armee. He was 20 when he survived the Russian invasion and he fought at the Battles of Leipzig and Waterloo. He was captured by the Prussians so I think he was a part of Grouchy's 30, 000 sent to persue them. He spent six months at a POW camp at Danzig. He was an ethnic German from Alsace-Lorraine so I bet he was a translator between the German speaking Prussians and his French speaking comrades. If I ever have a son, his middle name will be Nikolaus in his honour.
