why I won't do an AirUp sponsorship

Swellmas day 11! I have been seeing AirUp sponsorships on Youtube for a while and I made the decision at the start to not work with them because frankly I don't need the product. But I still wanted to give them the chance to impress me so I ordered one of their standard water bottles and a variety of scent disks (pods?) to try.

AirUp cancels out the sustainability of reusable water bottles by making you continually buy plastic cartridges to throw away. Putting fruit in your water is way more environmentally friendly.

for anyone with allergies (like me) who might think this is a cool idea because you can't (or are limited) drink flavor things to drink more water, just know that when I first heard of this company months ago, I emailed them and asked about the pods. they said they cannot guarantee they are safe for people with allergies. even though you aren't supposed to ingest anything and it's all by smell, stuff from the pods can always get into the water. so yeah. anyone with bad allergies to fruits and other things shouldn't try them :D

I think the reason AirUp annoys me is that their ads just seem so...insistent that they are doing something revolutionary. Like, flavoured water does in fact exist. That and the fat they made a pee flavour.

My sister had one of these. In addition to the scent pods being expensive and annoying to constantly have to rebuy, the shape of the bottle made it so hard to clean. It just WOULD NOT dry, the shape made it hard to get a tea towel in but also stopped water from draining out. It got nasty. Living in a very hard water area it can be hard to enjoy plain water, but getting a filtering jug costs half of what air up does and fresh fruit in water tastes better anyways

Hi there! Aspiring food scientist/sensory scientist here. The science behind these bottles is by taking advantage of retro nasal olfaction. Basically there’s 2 ways for the compounds for aroma to get into the nasal cavity: the nose and up the back of your throat. I think a lot of people have heard that most of flavor is smell, and that’s completely right, since retronasal olfaction accounts for most of flavor (in addition to taste and nerve sensations). So in fact, you’re mostly just smelling the flavors of these pods, though there is some taste happening.

Now the problem with this bottle is that the people have different levels of ability to perceive aroma or odor. Some people just lack the receptors for some odors (this is called anosmia). The bigger issue is with the nose. In order to have retronasal olfaction, the nose HAS to be unblocked so that air can flow through. This can change with allergies or illness, and it’s why flavors are harder to taste when your nose is stuffed. The general population also has people who have structural differences like deviated septum. This really decreases your ability to perceive odor.

Okay so two paragraphs later, what’s my point? My point is everyone perceives aroma and flavor with differing levels of sensitivity. That makes this product difficult to market, and the AirUp company have made really broad claims on how EVERYONE will experience this sensation. Also!!! Aroma and flavor is extremely hard to capture in a pod such as that, and that’s part of the reason why many people experience the “vomit” aroma/flavor with specific flavors like peach. Aroma composition is crazy complex, and by producing such complex flavor pods, the aromas will definitely get muddled and interact in odd ways.

Most sponsorships remind me of the as seen in tv ads. Useless and the good ole “only 19.99 plus shipping and handling” but now it’s subscription based plans that are a pain in the ass to deal with.

It’s the unnecessary plastic waste for me. Like, just put some hydration flavor powder in it? You get electrolytes and the water becomes flavored. Problem solved.

i also thought this was dumb when it kept getting advertised to me like why are people acting like this is revolutionary its quite literally sniffing. this and FUM are like the same level of dumb to me. it's advertising to a specific really niche group of people (people who dont drink water/people who are quitting smoking) and acting like its something revolutionary EVERYONE needs when its not

Something i've seen the most about people who actually review airup is that they get sick because of the smell. The smell makes them think they're eating or drinking something but then they just drink water which fucks with their brain and stomach. Thats the reason i'll always narrow my eyes at Danny and Jarvis for their airup sponsorships.

I’m SO GLAD someone else said this! I had the same issue! My stomach felt weird after and it wasn’t because I was drinking too much water, it was the air. I got so bloated and burpy the night that I got it and I’ve never used it since. TERRIBLE product.

My biggest issue is how they hype up the straw, but all those grooves on the inside make for the perfect near impossible to properly clean bottle.

Fun Facts: Knife Blocks aren't allowed in restaurant kitchens because once you buy it, you can't really clean inside the knife holes; and people own them for years :)
