Nikopolis, Epirus - Greece HD Travel Channel

Nicopolis, the former Roman city of victory, lies in the Greek region Epirus not far from Préveza. The city of Nicopolis was founded by Octavian in 31 BC to commemorate his victory in the naval battle of Actium for the autocracy in the Roman Empire against Mark Antony and Cleopatra. After being destroyed by the Goths in the 5th century, Emperor Justinian I expanded the city with mighty ramparts and 36 towers.
In its heyday, the city had about 230,000 inhabitants. Under Octavian the so-called Aktia games were carried out. They took place on a nearby hill at the Sanctuary of Apollo. The games consist of physical as well as musical competitions. Still today, the remains of the theater and the stadium document the impressive dimensions of Nicopolis.

Nikopolis, die ehemalige römische Stadt des Sieges, liegt unweit von Préveza in der griechischen Region Epirus.
Zur Erinnerung an seinen Sieg 31 v.Chr. in der Seeschlacht bei Actium um die Alleinherrschaft im römischen Reich gegen Marcus Antonius und Kleopatra, gründete Oktavian die Stadt Nikopolis. Nach der Zerstörung durch die Goten im 5. Jahrhundert ließ Kaiser Justinian I die Stadt mit mächtigen Befestigungsmauern und 36 Türmen ausbauen.
In ihrer Blütezeit hatte die Stadt ca. 230.000 Einwohner. Unter Oktavian wurden die Aktia genannten Spiele durchgeführt. Sie fanden beim Apolloheiligtum auf einem nahegelegenen Hügel statt. Die Spiele beinhalteten neben den körperlichen auch musikalische Wettbewerbe. Die Reste des Theaters und des Stadions dokumentieren noch heute die imposanten Dimensionen von Nikopolis.

Das war mal ein interessanter Ausflug...:) Früher in der Schule fand ich das immer total langweilig, aber nun holt man so hier und da gerne Wissen nach...
