How to Digitize 8mm Tapes : Part 1

In Part 1 we look at how to connect up a system to digitize these 8mm tapes onto a DVD for further storage and editing.

I have used this method many times with great results. My Handycam came with a cord specifically to use for transferring to dvd or to just play on tv. Very simple to transfer the Hi 8 tapes to dvd. You did a great job on this video!

I believe the SVHS output on the Sony cam would have given you more lines of resolution when recording in XP. RCA cable output is less resolution.

My Sony digital 8mm can play analogue 8mm tapes and it has a 1394 / Firewire socket. So all you have to do is stick the tape in, connect it to the computer and capture the film to the computer where you can edit it.

I believe you're referring to S-Video (not S-VHS, which is a tape format). S-Video splits the signal into luma and chroma sub-channels, eliminating the need to comb filer the signal in the recorder or playback device. This has some merit for higher-resolution formats but I've found really doesn't make much difference in practice, especially for older, tape based formats.

Actually I was looking for how to transfer 8MM real to real film as on a film projector, to DVD.

Will this work on a computer DVD burner drive? Or do I need a separate Dvd recorder? I have been having problems with the movie and soundtrack going out of sync. I am using a Sony Hi 8 Camcorder.

My DVD recorder finalizes very quickly (Lite-On brand bought from Radio Shack in 2005).

you should use something with A digital output or Svhs jack, rca jacks sucks, quality sucks, 8mm record at about 25mps and dvd top out at 8.5mps, I shoot everything I film at 28mps per secount.
