How to use RME Audio TotalMix FX - 01 Control Room

Welcome to TotalMix FX, the most powerful zero latency monitoring mixer in the audio world. The first thing you should do after installing your RME audio interface is set up the control room section in TotalMix FX. This will group all your monitoring channels together, as well as setting up relationships between channels so advanced functions like speaker switching, talkback, cueing and front panel controls will work properly.

First, decide which channels will connect to the monitoring system and headphones. In the bottom right section of the TotalMix FX, click the assign button, then hover on Main to see the available channels. If you connected your monitors to output channels 1 & 2, then select AN 1-2 here. Now do the same for Phones. If you’re using a built in Phones jack, it should be easy to find here, labeled PH.

If you have additional headphones outputs, you can assign up to 4 mixes as headphones. These will all receive the Talkback signal when activated.

Now that the relevant channel faders are grouped together, you can adjust the output level for each by raising or lowering the fader position. Once you have found the optimal level, you can set this value in the Options - Settings menu as the Recall level. Then any time you click the Recall button in Control Room, the fader will jump to this position. You can also set a DIM value here, and this level reduction can then be accessed with the DIM button.

If you use 2 sets of monitors for comparison, you can set this up in the control room. So for instance, if the second monitor set is connected to Analog out 3 and 4, select this in the assign menu. Now a new Speaker B fader is moved to the Control Room, and you can alternate between main and speaker B with this button. Once you have calibrated the levels between the two monitor sets, activate Fader link to keep the relative levels the same.

If you need to check which channels are assigned in the Control Room, click the Names button on the right side panel to show the real channel names.

Thanks for the clarity. I for one was totally confused with total mix for a long time, but it's starting to get better. This brief tutorial was really good at explaining and advancing my knowledge. I'm a single man show, used to just using one thing at a time while creating songs, and now I want to advance capabilities to set up multiple phone mixes and control room speakers. Thanks a ton.

Thank you! I am learning from TotalMix FX from the ground up for my home studio and own a FireFace UFX+ (purchased Oct. 2021). This tutorial has been very helpful.

TotalMix is complicated, but ... 1) think of every hardware output channel in the bottom row as having its own individual mixer. So when it is highlighted any signal coming from your hardware inputs or software inputs can be routed to and through the selected channel by raising the faders in any of those hardware input or software input channels. ... 2) learn to use the snapshots so you can save any particular setups you need for different tasks such as recording, mixing, etc. ... 3) understand Loopback so you can stream audio from any ASIO compatible software and record the streams individually or mixed back into any DAW or recording program. When a hardware output channel's Loopback function is enabled it now also becomes an input channel back to your DAW. When you 'get it' your mind will be blown. Can you say: "record and monitor with ZERO Latency?'

Hi there

Recently I purchased the RME UFX and was experiment to link up with my previous FF800, however the attempt failed as I couldnt see any signals coming from Ableton Live 9.

I did receive the signal in TotalMix, but just not in the daw

My connection goes like this:

FF800 as Master, FF800 to Thunderbolt to my MacBook Pro

UFX Adat 1 out to FF800 Adat in

UFX FF400 port to FF800's 400 port

Stereo hardware synth to ch5&6 input on UFX

with some routing I was able to see and hear the signal in FF800 TotalMix.

but no matter which channel I set in the FF800 Total Mix I just couldnt see anything in the Ableton Live channel configuration.

please let me know if I miss any steps.

all the best

I have a Fireface UFX. A while back after an update, the "Main Mix" took on the label "SC Mix." What does "SC Mix" mean?

I have a BabyFace Pro with the outputs hooked up to my external mixer. My monitors are hooked up to my mixer. If I set my monitors to AN1/2 and my headphones to Phones 3/4, I only get sound coming out of my monitors.
