Why Was The Forgotten First Jedi Purge Far Worse Than Order 66? Palpatines Order 66 led to the near complete destruction of the Jedi. According to Imperial records, just over 100 Jedi survived, although the actual number is likely quite a bit higher. However, the First Jedi Purge was far more successful. The Jedi of this period were already weakened by the wars of Exar Kun, Mandalore the Ultimate and Revan. So when Darth Sion and Nihilus rose to power there was little resistance. Most were killed by Darth Sion or his Sith assassins, but the final brutal massacure was enacted by Darth Nihilus. After all the remaining Jedi met to discuss their future, Nihilus sucked the life force from the planet, leaving only a handful of Jedi to defeat the Sith and restore the Order.
