Why do NRIs & immigrants feel so strongly about Hindu nationalism

Hindu nationalism in the diaspora has existed for almost as long as the Hindu nationalist movement itself. But what makes the diaspora drawn to long-distance cultural and religious nationalism? Is it a desire to be connected to their homeland? Is it a way of coping with the alienation that comes with the immigrant experience? A new book ‘Hindu Nationalism in the Indian Diaspora' answers these questions.

Get him to also talk about the role of Anglo American colonialism in crushing and erasing native religious identities. This professor represents that establishment (which is still alive).

An indian asking a british guy about hindus and india. We are not independent even in our thought. Would a briton ever ask an indian about whats going on in Britain.

How feeling proud of Hindu heritage is Hindu nationalism. Is feeling good about christian heritage is christian nationalism.

So he wrote a book on why do Indian immigrants take pride in their culture and participate in all these cultural activities?? While a special section of the immigrant population is hell bent on taking the west back into stone age.

On the one hand you wish to speak about Hindus seeking validation from the West, and on the other hand, you are relying on the scholarship of a guy from the UK to define what Hindutva is, and about its prevalence among the diaspora. Are you confused, the print? Also, since when is Hindutva a supremacist agenda?

Yes, we are. Its a reaction to Muslim takeover of India growing from 10% to 14% of the population, 20 million illegal Muslim immigrants, Congress rule for 60 years when nothing was done while China raced past us and while they stayed in power by dividing Hindus and pampering Muslims. We learnt from the illegal immigration in Europe and the Islamization of western democracies. We learnt from the bias against and lack of understanding the West has about Hinduism. We learnt from the breakup of India into India and Pakistan in which the Muslims conspired with the British to divide the country. It is also a backlash of colonialism and the realization of how the truth about impoverishment of India under colonial rule. We learnt from the neo colonial policies of the West to keep India down.

Raping killing and vandalising in UK

Well we also have muzlim in India

I am not into Religions or any other labels, but I am from India and settled in America. Both the philosophy of Hindu Religion and the Festivals are well received even in Academic Institutions here (I work for Emory University Atlanta). I even celebrate Diwali in my Kid's school - give Diwali gifts to kids - and briefly explain to them that a Festival of lights is so common in many cultures - another way to tell the kids that despite of differences in religions and traditions - we have a lot of similarities just embrace them.

The general assumption is that Hindu Nationalist = Chauvinist. This comes from the west's understanding of Nationalism from the European experience. Was it ever considered that BJPs rise and the resurgence of Hindu Nationalism has given NRIs a sense of pride and we can walk with our heads held high?

Is it Hindu nationalism or proud of being Indian

I don't understand why the professor finds coming together of diaspora and 'Hindutva' as a problematic thing. The diaspora neither talks against any religion or disrupts any government's working like what SFJ does in Canada for eg.

Being proud of Indian heritage or openly practicing Hindu religion in UK or supporting BJP as a better party in Indian politics is not Hindu nationalism!!
Most people support BJP as they see it being good for Indian economy. Most NRI’s invest heavily in India especially in Indian stock market and buy lands. Good economy works in their favour. Seeing their country doing well also makes them proud. Seeing everything from a Hindu nationalism lens is being very narrow minded and one tracked. There are multiple reasons why people support BJP. This is like saying people who support Republicans in US or Conservatives/ reform in UK are Christian nationalists and racists!
Just Because you support right wing in US or UK doesn’t mean you are a Christian nationalist or racist Please stop generalising like this! Just because you support right wing BJP does not mean that you are against minorities! Most people very peacefully follow their religion n stay part of Indian culture and religious practices by joining cultural groups! The reason is to celebrate festivals together in a country where you are a micro minority! Not to hate anyone! You have a Very ill informed and narrow view point!
Learn to differentiate between Hindus following n practising their religion and Hindus who having radical views!
Do you see videos or reports of hate speech in any of these cultural groups like you see from Bangladeshi or Pakistani communities? No! Because no hate speech happens in these groups! That is the fact!

I am a proud Hindu living in UK for the last 30 years. The word 'nationalism' as used in UK has negative connotations and is completely misfounded. I am proud of being a Hindu because my faith is peaceful, tolerant, and inclusive. I will be a Hindu wherever I live without harming anyone.

I object to the use of the word 'nationalism' to Hinduism by an Indian reporter.

Some advice for the young lady
1) Don't keep nodding no matter how much you agree with your guest, Body language experts will tell you that is a submissive demure which we Indians typify.
2) Don't ever denigrate your own country & roots by giving handle to an outsider with vested interest or by seeking their validation,
I am a Proud Hindu & a nationalist but am yet to come across a Hindu Supremacist in my very wide network of friends & relatives. Term is an oxymoron. If you are a Hindu, you believe in every soul being equal & Vasudaiva Kutumbukam. Be aware that there is an active campaign by some countries & through their liberal Media houses to delegitimise the Indian government & in their attempt to do so, they have built this narrative about rabid Hindu Nationalism. If you are going to be a pawn in their hands don't be an unwitting one & make sure you get your dues. Wishing you every success in future.
