Today we're building a pretty standard retro Pentium system. It's also on a budget so we'll see what we can do on the cheap! Grab a coffee, or a soda cuz it's kind of a long vid.

My first ever self built pc used a pentium mmx 233. My first ever pc I bought was a Packard bell 133, after having it for a year a rebuilt it myself and upgraded it to a 233 and I believe 128mb of ram. Put a voodoo 2 in it, and it ran games very well at the time. Mainly quake 1 and 2. Have built hundreds since then.

I just did a build with the same 430TX gateway OEM motherboard. You def have to jump through hoops when it comes to CF Card setup, but I finally have a routine figured out. I’d be happy to send you some photos of my build, as well as the latest motherboard firmware (gateway specific) as well as some other tips. Do you have a public email?

I also have a Gateway socket 7 Mainboard and the CPU fan is also not working.
It's the Anigma-Solectron SCI 586 PCI Board.

98se would cruise on that. You could even do ME if you throw in a pci radeon 9600 or voodoo3 but it would be slow. Stable but slow
98se would be your best bet though, or puppy linux if you dont need windows.

Why didn't you move the floppy drive down one and put the CF drive in the top 3 1/2" slot? theres a bit of clearance for the cable then.

We have this chip in our Swiss Charmilles EDM cnc machine year 2002 vintage. There was an issue with the heat sink being improperly installed or buggered by previous owner. I cleaned everything up with alcohol, installed a new fan, sanded back of copper heatsink smooth with 320 grit paper on a flat plate. ( had telltale marks of someone gluing something and then scraping it off later with a blade of some sort ) I then reset the heatsink with a pea sized drop of non conductive paste and double checked my work. Before our intervention we had been running the machine a few months with the rear control door open in an effort to keep it cool until I could get to it for proper in depth inspection. Control would shut itself down and then reboot due to overheating, we figured this out after a while. I saw no signs of extreme heat or burning, and the machine has been running flawlessly since the new fan and heatsink reset done. Is there anyway that we could have harmed the chip ? Should I be looking around for a spare chip ? If so where can we buy one or two ?

Intel 430TX can only cache 64mb of ram. Going other that can reduce overall performance.

Why does it "pain your soul" to use two IDE ribbon cables. That is the optimal and preferred setup. It used to kill me to see computers with the CD-ROM slaved off the Hard Drive. Because it absolutely torpedoes the data rates for both. Anything your often using at the same time should be on separate cables. So hard drives on one IDE cable, and removable media on the other.
