in that situation just walk up front to the cashier and say: okay, let’s watch the security camera footage. and then demand a discount for inconvenience

Had this happen, they kept insisting it was theirs when I hadn't even bought it from the same store, so I just asked "Okay, go get me another one then and I'll buy them both"

This happened to me once. I told security, "Yes, go ahead and call the police. Just be aware that I expect an apology from your manager and yourself when this is resolved." I got my apologies <3

Retail associates can’t confront shoplifters, due to danger concerns. The only thing they can do is notify security which then handle it.

A cashier once stopped me on the way out from a small convenience store cuz I didn’t buy anything and I still had a box of chocolate I bought at another store sticking out from my full bag. I gave her the receipt but she was still suspicious cuz the store named it weird and she wasn’t sure it was the right receipt. She asked to see what else was in my bag. Girl didn’t even budge an eye when I pulled out a regular kitchen glass I was gonna use as a flower vase. She let me go in the end. I‘m pretty sure they didn’t even sell that brand of chocolate

Had this happen when I was hanging out with friends. We were leaving a store and got stopped because my other friend had stolen something (we didn’t know). They then suspected me and I had to dump my entire bag on the floor to prove I didn’t steal, we were also “banned” from the store lol. Didn’t help that I’m black, so it felt so humiliating

Something like this happened to me. Told the guy I can wait for him to call security and check cameras. He didn't want to and sneakily charged me for my own item + what I was purchasing and gave me a bs story that only his manager can do returns and didn't want to share the manager info so I can talk to them. To make things worse, it was only the both of us in the small store since I walked in.
Funny how it happened 3x with the same company in 2 different locations and my stuff was worn out 😑 They made such a big fuzz I called my bank for a charge back and never entered that store again.

If this does happen to someone, let the stores lp(loss prevention) deal with it. They can check cameras and the last thing they want to do is call the cops.
