After over a decade of relying on small dongle streamers that never quite matched the competition, Google is launching the Google TV Streamer. It’s way bigger than a dongle, has a built-in Ethernet port, and a processor that’s 22% more powerful than previous versions. It also has Matter and Thread support built-in, making it a real competitor to the big boys.

What do you think of the new Google TV Streamer? Enough to make you pick one up?

22% faster is kinda of a joke considering the last Chromecast is nearly 4y old.

At double the price, I would expect more than 22% more power. The Onn 4k Pro is only $49.99 has 3gb of RAM, 32GB of storage, and works as an actual communication device and has stock Google TV. I think the Walmart product is far more impressive at half the cost.

I have loved my Chromecast 4k that I've had the past few years.

It needed to be a Shield killer. Still no reason for me to give up my Shield.

A 22% faster CPU is a marginal upgrade. Google needs to future proof devices with better hardware like Nvidia if they are going to go with multiple years between chromecast releases (4 years for the 4K Google Chromecast). The Fire TV Cube 3 is 100% faster than the 2020 4k Chromecast and the price hovers around $110 or less with sales.

Why is this $100? It's slightly faster than a 4 year old $50 device, has no ports, nothing really special about it? Seems to be about on par with the $50 walmart streaming box?

RIP this device in few years as we know google.

Still not a Shield killer based on its anemic audio support.

22% faster with no Bluetooth 5.3 or WiFi 6/7...

No usb ports is a big no for me, although being Google I wasn’t expecting any.

Does "spatial audio" mean were finally getting to use our nest speakers as full home surround? They announced that back in 2020 I'm pretty sure! Still hasn't happened

It's disappointing that Google has not released a Google Streamer box with the Tensor G4 Processor. This would have made the product future-proof, especially considering that Apple has already taken similar steps.

As a fan, it's disheartening to see this decision, as it may cause the product to struggle against competition from Apple.

no dedicated usb for hooking up external storage or controllers is a dealbreaker
edit: ESPECIALLY AT $100

I want to see what the next Nvidia Shield has to offer before I get this.

Why not keep both products, one as a home device and one as a portable device???

I thought he was going to say "this is 2024 and this is a google product, so it will most likely get killed "

So how long does it take for Google to discontinue this product?

Can it decode all codecs (DTS-X) if not, then the Shield is still top dog. Also, can it upscale?

so basically, 2 gb more ram, 24gb more storage, 1 g Ethernet port, and 22% more powerful cpu for 50 dollar more than previous version which has been 4 years. So On the previous version, I bet all the people bought usb c hub with extra storage with 1g Ethernet port on it. Question is is twice of money worth it? ATM I would say Meh~~ but I don't know. What would you think?
