Looking in particular at the tasks the candidate will perform, we can divide them into scientific and soft skills.

Scientific skills the candidate will obtain during the PhD:
- Design from scratch biosensors for the detection of different types of biomarkers (nucleic acids, proteins, small molecules),
- Create and optimize paper-based microfluidics devices,
- Synthesize and characterize (using electron microscopy and other techniques available in the institute) a variety of nanomaterials (including gold nanoparticles and graphene),
- Use biomolecules (such as antibodies and aptamers) to functionalize different nanomaterials (gold nanoparticles, quantum dots, graphene),
- Carry out gold standard diagnostics test (such as Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbent Assays, Polymerase Chain Reactions, etc),
- Work following chemical and biohazard safety regulations.

Soft skills the candidate will obtain during the PhD:
- Present the results orally in front of peers at national and international conferences,
- Write peer-reviewed articles for high impact scientific journals,
- Analyze data using statistical tools,
- Carry out public engagement activities.
