The Ultimate Guide To Making Pennsylvania Dutch Sandtarts

I’m sharing the family recipe for PA Dutch Sandtarts cookies: are a traditional treat enjoyed by many in the Pennsylvania Dutch community. These delicate and buttery cookies are typically made with a combination of flour, sugar, butter, and sometimes ground nuts or cinnamon for added flavor. The dough is rolled out thin and cut into various shapes before being baked to a delicious golden brown.
Sandtarts are often enjoyed during holidays and special occasions, with each family having their own unique recipe and variations. Some may choose to sprinkle the cookies with powdered sugar or top them with a light glaze for an extra touch of sweetness. Whether enjoyed with a cup of coffee or shared with loved ones, Pennsylvania Dutch Sandtarts are a delightful and nostalgic treat that brings warmth and joy to any occasion.

2 C Sugar
3 eggs
4 cups Flour

My sister lives in Germany ( she is married to a German citizen) and her husband's aunt would make the best Christmas cookies I have ever eaten. I don't even know what they are called...they were bite size and had several varieties. I smuggled a tin home with me in 2007. She actually baked them on a wood stove.

Sand tarts are a challenge to make! Your’s are beautiful and look like they could win a prize for thinness and crisp. :) Your niece is adorable! It’s important to get kids in the kitchen so family recipes are not lost. :)

Thanks. My grandmother made these and they were always so good. My problem with making them has always been the rollout so I thank you for the tips.

Sand tarts were my mom's favorite cookie. Since we thought these cookies were so labor intensive, we decided to purchase them from Amish at a farmers' market at Green Dragon in Ephrata PA.

Mom made these every Christmas. She added finely grated rind of a lemon, didn’t roll them out quite as thin as yours.

Hi LeAnne, what a special little helper. My favorite cookie at Christmas is called “Swiss Shrimp”, it is a delicate dough cut out into circles and filled with chopped pecans and honey, folded over and shaped into a curved moon. While still warm from the oven you shake them in powdered sugar. So good!
