Here's a guide for how to choose a speargun for California and Baja. These tips could also be applied to other areas where you might be spearfishing as well.

If you're absolutely new to spearfishing then I recommend going out snorkeling with a buddy a few times before bringing a speargun. The key to spearfishing is taking baby steps and adding complexity as you feel more comfortable. After you're able to equalize properly and your wetsuit, mask, and other gear is working properly, then it's time to progress.
Next, I'd recommend getting a small speargun or pole spear. For a speargun, get something that is short enough for you to load without assistance. Being underpowered will allow you to work on your technique for hitting reef fish in your area.
After you've been spearing for a while, then it's worth getting at least a 100cm speargun. If you're on a budget, go with 110-130cm to give you flexibility for hunting reefs or pelagics.
Eventually, you'll get dialed in with what you like to hunt and can try different wood guns or roller spearguns.
I first started with a 100cm Hammerhead Evo2 but have since moved on to owning multiple guns with my primary being a Pathos Sniper Roller aluminum at 95cm.
