How reflection is Bob Seger’s superpower

It’s a song that finds a center in growing older, by an artist who wrote many of his best songs from a nostalgic viewpoint. In fact, the very title of “Against The Wind” by Bob Seger came from his highschool days, running track and cross country, a runner’s phrase that stuck with Seger and perfectly described how he saw his own life as a road-worn musician, maturing out on the road. The title track of his eleventh studio album - his only album to go to #1 on the album chart - it is one of the best examples of how Seger used his own life’s journey to get to certain personal truths that everyone can sing along to. Let’s look back into “Against The Wind” in this episode of the Behind The Song podcast.

And another track from Bob Seger describes my youth. Night Moves. I spent my teenage years working out my night moves. Eventually I worked it out. "Working on mysteries without any clues." OMG, how did he know?
The track is most beautiful when dies away and goes quiet for a moment, then comes back.
I remember, I remember, I remember, I remember .
Nobody writes music with such beauty, melody, insight and soul these days. I pity modern kids listening to elevator music who have never heard of Bob Seger.

Lifelong fan of Bob Seger since I was about 8 or 9 when my much older brother allowed me to play his Night Moves album on repeat. Bought that album and all his others after that and was a massive fan. I really commend your writing prowess Janda. It's always spot on, and written with the high end clarity and insightfulness of some of the top writings I've seen in music magazines. You don't just give a summary, but you provide actual insight and clarity when you summarize in a way that surprises even a fan like me, having listened so some of these songs thousands of times. Great work!

This is the music that accompanied me when I first left my home in my youth.
Even then I understood what he was saying. And the piano accompaniment with that beautiful tune. This moves me deeply. Thanks Janda.

I love this song and your breakdown of it. It's one of my favorite Bob Seger tunes. I'd like to hear you cover "Beautiful Loser" sometime. It's kind of an underrated song of his. Great work as always, Janda! 👍🏼
