Germany works to extend civil defense network | DW News

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has raised questions over civil defense in Germany. The government is working to increase the number of bunkers available to protect the population if the country comes under attack. Existing shelters could only house a tiny fraction of any targeted population.

Its better to be prepared because Russia is unstable and unpredictable. I believe the Russian aggression is raising awareness to be prepared. Great interview on DW.

Fortunately, Switzerland has always maintained and preserved its civil defense bunkers well. Currently, there are even more sleeping places in these bunkers than there are residents. These civil defense bunkers still serve as accommodations for the Swiss Army during exercises: entire companies, meaning hundreds of soldiers, are quartered there for up to three weeks. The bunkers are fully equipped with kitchens, showers, and all necessary facilities. This allows barracks to remain dedicated to training recruits, eliminating the need to resort to tent camps.

Switzerland has a special civil defense organization made up of conscripted citizens, not just office workers. They take care of the bunkers and would support people inside them, including providing psychological help and doing maintenance work. It's similar to Germany's THW, but while the THW focuses more on technical disaster relief, the Swiss system is more about bunker upkeep and helping people directly.

Public shelters are not only for nuclear strikes; they are for regular air raids as well!

This whole conversation had such a weird starting assumption: Let's not do anything since we all die anyway?

In Finland we have a law that requires all newly constructed buildings over 1000 square meter of combined living or commercial space to have shelter to all of its residents. Thus, over 80% of the population has a shelter in case some bad actor doesn't "just want to talk".

The Germans should have plenty of Bunkers left over from WW2. All they need to do is refurbish them.

I live in a country who didnt even go to war for over 200 years and we cover 80% of the population, roughly 60.000 bunkers.

I actually wanted to leave the crazy US and move back to civilized Europe in the next 3-4 months. But now, I’m not sure how safe Europe is. Maybe I should stay in the US a little longer and wait and see what is happening in Europe. Or maybe I should move somewhere else, Thailand or who knows where?
