Pine trees have another adaptation that keeps them 'evergreen'; The needles. The shape has a lower surface area, so they don't cool off as much as a normal leaf. Otherwise, the sugar concentration would have to be even higher to keep them from freezing.

I find it really cool to see that looking at different sugar concentrations in tree species, you see a split where they swap out their secondary frost protection of loosing their leaves for this other adaptation.

In the tropics we tap palm trees to obtain a sweet sap from which we make palm drink, palm sugar, palm syrup, vinegar and arak or tuak which are alcoholic. We also tap trees for other things such as dammar resin which can burn like kerosene and produce light from the dammar pine or rubber from rubber trees.

Fun Fact: Sugar Maples are not the only Maples that can be tapped for tasty syrup. I have tapped Red Maple, and enjoyed it.
Or even the only tree. I hear Birch Syrup is delicious.
Always check Wiki for potential toxins before you tap. A quick Google on the subject got me a lot of recommendations.

As a Canadian I have never heard of antifreeze and but believe it replaces the maple syrup that I pour into my car

Larches are so cool. They're conifers like pine trees (they have needles and are shaped like a Christmas tree and they grow cones to reproduce (like a pinecone), but they're actually deciduous so their needles turn golden yellow in the fall and fall off which kinda makes them look dead

I've heard that if the leaves get filled up with snow then the branches get too heavy they break off and that's even worse for the tree.

I remember one time I was in a trailer park the kind for actual camping (so RV park) and some of the branches were breaking off and you'd hear them crashing to the ground. Wonder if they would have destroyed an RV had they landed on them
