Trees also need to breathe in oxygen!

Trees also take in oxygen to turn the sugars they produce during photosynthesis into energy through respiration. They ultimately produce more oxygen than they consume, though.

so the trees are instinctively breaking free from their concrete confinement

I liked one of your videos, and now youtube decided that I'm obsessed with trees now. I'm learning a lot though, and I'm enjoying it.

It's weird, I've known this about trees for 50yrs. But the experts who built a new bike path in town, planted trees right next to path on North side. So path is ruined (roots), branches try to decapitate you and shade is on the wrong side. Is this done on purpose to make biking on path a negative? Does California hate bicyclists? I feel the answer may be yes.

Trees and plants AREN'T actually a significant source of oxygen, given the fact that estimates put anywhere between 50 to 70% of oxygen production comes from marine sources, like plankton

Not to mention anaerobic soil conditions are ripe condition for harmful bacteria and drainage problems

I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying your little uploads
My mum never let me have plants in my room as she said I’d suffocate at night 😂

The real reason plants release more oxygen then they use is because some of the sugars they make are turned into structural molecules like cellulose.

If all the sugar made by photosynthesis was for respiration then plants would use as much oxygen as they make.

Plants don’t just use photosynthesis for energy but also to get the bulk of what they use to grow.

for anyone wondering about the science, here's a layman breakdown to the best of my knowledge:

during photosynthesis, plants like trees have specialized parts which react to the light of the sun. this solar energy causes a charged electron to break free from a special membrane and begin a whole cascade that eventually creates stored energy for the plant in the form of sugars.

but this is only STORED energy—plants also need a way to use that energy to keep themselves alive, especially at night when no new energy is being produced by photosynthesis. therefore, plant cells undergo respiration, which is something animal cells also do, to convert this stored energy into a more usable form, called ATP. to make this conversion, a chemical reaction has to occur, and the agent which can most efficiently make this happen in ALL cells is oxygen!

so, in order for plants to use the energy they create from the sun at night, they have to consume a bit of oxygen. but because this type of respiration (aerobic) is so efficient, plants ultimately still make more oxygen during the day than they consume in doing this.

even so, they still need oxygen to power these reactions, and a plant starved of oxygen for hours at a time when it's dark is essentially fasting, which drastically reduces its health. since the roots are what take in the most oxygen for respiration, they should be left uncovered and exposed to the atmosphere.

For weeks the smoke from the Candian fires has polluted to air on the East Coats and therefore the trees...Trees here in Baltimore are in VISABLE decline and many dropped their leaves

I always find it depressing and a near crime to see city trees suffocated and compacted like that

The papers ive seen find that forests overall are actually not net oxygen producers which is interesting.

Thank you Andrew.

When I was a kid I was told trees and plants are dangerous inside rooms!
For the very same reasons you described here 😊

Which is why the air smells so fresh early in the morning! From 5:00am-7:00am is my favorite time of the day. It grounds me (pardon the pun) to be outside during those hours, regardless of the temperature or weather - I enjoy it very much, all thanks to Mother Earth (trees), Father Sky (air) and our glorious Creator (God), who has given ALL of this to us due to His eternal love. Don’t disrespect it by not noticing (and thanking) the trees!!

In case you were wondering, According to National Geographic, about 70% of the oxygen in the atmosphere comes from marine plants and plant-like organisms.

If tree's are taking in Co2 produced by other tree's... does that mean, in a way, they're sniffing each others farts?

algea....algea produces most of our oxygen. trees and plants consume roughly the same amount of oxygen they put out. The phytoplankton and algea that grow on the top 2 feet of water that covers the planet produce the bulk of our oxygen.

Really no wonder trees will fail and come crashing down in storms due to the restriction of their concrete encasement.
