Silverado: The Best Kevin Costner Western You Never Saw

in 1985, a mini-revival of sorts took place for the Western. Eastwood returned to the genre with his PALE RIDER, while writer-director Lawrence Kasdan, riding high off the success of BODY HEAT and THE BIG CHILL (not to mention his work on the screenplays for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, RETURN OF THE JEDI & RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK), made his own western epic. Very much in the mold of golden age, John Ford-era westerns, SILVERADO took the fun-loving, high adventure vibe Kasdan brought to his Lucasfilm classics, and adapted it to the genre, making a throughly entertaining oater that should have been a hit. Instead, it did very modest business, grossing $32 million on a $23 million budget - not a disaster, but not a hit either - unfortunately opening the same weekend as BACK TO THE FUTURE. Nowadays, it’s best remembered as Kevin Costner’s first big role.

This is one of the best westerns ever made. It is a fantastic movie! One of the many many highlights I had in this movie was seeing Linda Hunt as the manager of the saloon. All the cast are fantastic and she was as good as any of them. I always enjoy watching this film and watch it a couple times a year at least.

To this day when we're struggling to get on the road for a trip I'm saying, "It's a bad start boys!" Even though nobody knows what I'm quoting. My friends and I were obsessed with this movie in college and it's so entertaining, Costner is electric, and everyone's rolls just fit so well.
