Lyrics:
I’m not gonna start the fire
Or start the war
Even though damage
Is the tongue you talk

‘Cause i’ve got nothing left to burn here
It’s all yours
If you want to lose it
What you waiting for

‘Cause it’s easy to break things
To pull them apart
And you’ve turned destruction
To some kind of art
I’ll hold up my head
Like I held out my heart
On that day in July
In the back of my car
I only wanted more
You only wanted war

I tried to reach you
Tried to change
I took the past from your shoulders
I took a piece of your pain

But you, you want a world
That you can blame
And I’m collateral damage
I only get in your way

‘Cause it’s easy to break things
To pull them apart
And you’ve turned destruction
To some kind of art
I’ll hold up my head
Like I held out my heart
On that day in July
In the back of my car
I only wanted more
You only wanted war

‘Cause it’s easy to break things
To pull them apart
And you’ve turned destruction
To some kind of art
I hope that you’re happy
Wherever you are
Like I was in July
Before you broke my heart
I only wanted more
All that I got was war

Well, what you've done here is turn destruction into some kind of art. What a cool mind you have ❤

This song perfectly describes trying to please, help, and/or love a covert narcissist. It doesn't have to be a romantic relationship. It could be a familial or work relationship or friendship. I only wanted more; more fellowship, more happy times, more get togethers. You only wanted war.

This is such a beautiful song. And resonates so deeply - July, my father had just died, and in the guise of my soul mate this man arrived at his funeral - flowers in one hand, knife behind his back 💔

We heard this song live in SF and it was fantastic! Can’t wait for the full song to release.

Wow! This song is heavy. It describes what happened to me when my sister in law turned her brother(my husband) against me. He is not mad at me any more, but still. I had tried all I had the power to do to make her feel loved and she spit on everything. She told my husband I said things I didn't say and made her feel unwelcome in every way. I tried to take the past from her shoulders, to take a piece of her pain. But she wanted a world that she could blame(not where she took responsibility). I am collateral damage, I only get in her way(she made that clear). The only thing is that it wasn't July. It was March of 2023. And it wasn't the back of a car. It was in my livingroom where she discarded me for the last time.

Perfect song describing loving someone who hasn't heard with their own internal traumas. This reminds me of so much of what life was like to me in love

Big perfect world ... a filmed video perhaps integrating both the beautifully 'deeply' personal sentiments of this with imagery of the Global aspects of how indeed the 'interests of greed' have murdered modern society. Cheers 🍻 Did i mention thank you Rose fabulous song ❤ 🌹

Love this song, and Roses' voice is perfect but I preferred the drum backing on the short! It was so powerful.

While I get this song is about love gone wrong…I’m a Millennial and a huge fan of history. Every big event I can remember ran through my mind as I thought of a bunch of old men in Congress when the chorus came on. This could be the dang theme song for younger Gen Xers, Xennials, Millenials, Zenniel, and even some Gen Zers (so far). In my minds eye, I saw a picture of my Dad holding me as the Berlin Wall fell on the TV behind him at midnight one night. I can vaguely remember IRA /British Attacks in Northetn Ireland, and The Good Friday Accords and the USS Cole and barracks and Columbine. But I can vividly remember watching 3000 people die on live television. Indelibly etched on my memory (and the moment we lost our collective innocence as a generation) is when a woman traffic reporter in a chopper, whose husband worked near the World Trade Center whispered nothing but, “We’re going to war” as the 2nd Tower fell (just after she’d announced the news that the Pentagon had been attacked. Few had even heard of Osama Bin Laden or Al Qaeda at that point of the day). But boy did this song take me to that moment, along with the subsequent fallout in Afghanistan and Iraq…and the anthrax attacks everyone forgets about, along with the Spanish French, and London Attacks in the years afterward, too (London’s Underground Bombing happened in July)… and everything forward—School Shootings galore, Brexit, election Day 2016 and Inauguration of 2017, Jan. 6, 2021, to Russia/Ukraine and Israel and Palestine…and of course, late 2019 (Australia) and the Dumpster Fire of 2020, and Dobbs overturning Roe v. Wade…this song hits all those memories HARD. “I only wanted more, but you only wanted war.” It’s like she could be singing America (and all of the West’s) next great protest song???…maybe!!! I wonder if she’d take these memories and make a protest song (or a sequel to Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire.”)
