I know the iPhone is waterproof. BUT are you really going to take a bare iPhone into the ocean or lake? That's why you need a case or pouch!

I've tested dozens of waterproof cases over the last 10 years and case manufacturers finally found a way to make the screens on waterproof cases not suck!

Here are Top 3 Cases:

Here's my Top Waterproof pouch pick:

• Catalyst waterproof was supposed to be #3, but the back pops out at 4-5 ft drops.
• #3 goes to the CozyCase/SportLink case, same product under different names.
• Costs around $20, significantly cheaper than the Top 2.
• IPX8 rating: waterproof but not much else.
• Packaging claims drop-proof but provides no values.
• Not MagSafe compatible.
• Stiff buttons.
• Decent screen protector, doesn’t affect quality.
• Case edges are rubber with grooves for good handling.
• Attach a lanyard for swimming.
• Stayed intact during drops but offers below-average impact protection.
• Looks beat up after drop tests, unlike the top 2.
• Water rating of IPX8: 6 ft for 1 hour or 3 ft for 30 mins.
• Passed tissue test, but water got inside the seal.
• Sound from iPhone is below average, not as loud as other cases.

• One of the slimmest waterproof cases in my test group.
• Great for day-to-day waterproof protection.
• Staple in the waterproof case category, reviewing Fre’s for over 10 years.
• Costs $65, one of the most expensive cases.
• Worth the price, but lacks extras like lanyard or opening tool.
• Tough case: MilSTD 810g rating, drop and water rated to 6.6 ft.
• MagSafe compatible, but camera bump can interfere with some accessories.
• Screen looks great, no diffusion.
• Stiff buttons.
• Grippy front face, slick back.
• Stayed together in drop tests, but impact protection is below average.
• Lanyard corner got crushed, not ideal for lakes or oceans.
• Waterproofing is reliable, gasket works well.
• Loud sound, acts as a reverberation chamber.
• 10% higher decibels from the iPhone in the Fre.

• Beefiest case in my test group.
• One of the most expensive.
• MagSafe compatible, drop rated to 12 ft, IP68 rated to 20 ft.
• Camera hump issue with some MagSafe accessories.
• Decent screen quality, similar to the Fre.
• Great texture: oversized corners for stability, grip strips along edges.
• Decent button access, but rubber covers action button area.
• No issues with the bottom hole size.
• Lanyard attachment area didn’t break during drops.
• Extra drop protection from oversized corners.
• Comes with a belt holster.
• No impact foam, iPhone rubs against a PC frame.
• Stayed intact during drop tests, 25% less impact recorded.
• Flexible back keeps it waterproof, back wraps around the edge.
• No issues in water tests.
• Loud sound, as good as the Fre.

I’m a bit confused about the intended use of these cases. Are you reviewing them for daily water resistance, or are they also meant for snorkeling and other water activities? I need a reliable underwater case, but it’s hard to tell which ones are suitable. For example, pouches seem designed for snorkeling, but I’m not sure about cases like the Nautical with no gasket on the back plate. Would you recommend it for snorkeling? Also, if I were to get an OtterBox, could I trust it to work well in the water, or is it more for daily splash protection?

Ya know what hit me about these cases is that they are trying to be a daily case that increases water and drop protection. -
No. -
With this category I would design it more purposefully. First, all ports and speakers should be completely blocked. It should be a bright color that you’ll be able to see if it gets dropped in the ocean or pool. They should also find a way to make it float. It should come with a good lanyard that can tighten around your wrist securely. Full coverage for the entire phone. Buttons for the sleep/power and volume buttons.

I have the Nautical 4 and you can’t make phone calls with the case on. Not sure if it’s just mine but yeah no one can hear you or they echo and get annoyed.

Hi, I have a question about the Otterbox Fre case. I want to use my phone while riding my motorcycle in the rain. When my phone is without a case, the touchscreen doesn’t work properly because of the raindrops. Will the Otterbox Fre allow the touchscreen to function even with rain on the screen? Also, if I want to use the phone underwater someday, will the touchscreen still work in that situation?

you have to be careful though perhaps the model is more resistant to high humidity you have to put your smartphone in a waterproof pouch to prevent the smartphone from getting wet 😊😊👍👍👍😊😊😊😊👍👍👍👍👍 😊😊😊😊
